Board Members present: Johnie McDow, Chairman, John Sullivan, Vice - Chairman, Reginna Agee,
William Bosch, Jim Fowler, Sally Macias, Robert Sheridan and Floy Simmons.
Staff present: Brian James, Executive Director Development Services, Lauren Shrum, Assistant
Director Parks, Recreation and Community Services and Sandy Bryant, Sr. Administrative Assistant.
Others present: Mr. F. Branch Archer.
Call to order. Meeting was called to order by Mr. Johnie McDow, Chairman at 5:31 p.m.
Hearing of residents:
There were no residents to be heard.
Regular Agenda:
Agenda Item No. 1. Minutes. Consideration and /or action regarding the approval of the minutes from
the January 22, 2018 regular meeting.
Motion was made to approve the minutes from the January 22, 2018 minutes Schertz Parks and
Recreation Advisory Board regular meeting.

Agenda Item No. 2. 2018 State of City. Ms. Shrum gave the Advisory Board a presentation of the 2018
State of City that is available on the City's website and discussed the items featuring the Parks
Department. Presentation only, no action was taken on this item.
Agenda Item No. 3. Update on Parks Program Guide. Ms. Shrum briefed the Advisory Board that the
first issue of the Program Guide was now available on the City's website and has been mailed out with
the April issue of the Schertz Magazine. Copies are available at the Schertz Visitor's Center and at the
Parks office. The Advisory Board was very pleased with the guide and complimented Ms. Shrum on her
effort to produce such a great guide. Update only, no action was taken on this item.
Agenda Item No. 4. National Marketing Efforts Pertaining to Parks and Recreation. Ms. Shrum briefed
the Advisory Board on some of the upcoming national marketing efforts the Parks Department will be
pursuing: Park & Recreation Month, Earth Day, Walk & Bike to School Day, Take Kids to Park Day,
Visit a Park Day and Great American Campout. Information only, no action was taken on this item.
Agenda Item No. 5. Update on Parks Board Regional Workshop. Ms. Shrum briefed the Advisory
Board that the Workshop Committee had met and discussed focusing their efforts on short term and long
term projects. They arrived at the following three courses of action:
1. Going to the North East Partnership meeting to discuss possibility of holding a Regional
Workshop
2. Creating an annual meeting or conference.
3. Board members voluntarily attending other cities Parks and Advisory Board meetings.
All three actions can occur simultaneously. Advisory Board recommended the committee continue their
efforts. No action was taken at this time.
Mr. Jim Fowler arrived at 6:15pm.
Agenda Item No. 6. Review Resident Petition Concerning Forest Ridge Park Ms. Shrum briefed the
Advisory Board on the petition from the Forest Ridge Park requesting updates to the Park. Ms. Shrum
noted there are several restrictions preventing putting equipment in this area. The Advisory Board
requested the Parks Department provide them with a Parks update priority list and restrictions list for
this park at the next meeting. No action was taken on this item.
Agenda Item No. 7. Committee of Committees Advisory Board (CCAB) Update The CCAB was
briefed by the Acting City Manager on the incident at the Fed -Ex facility and road impact fees. Public
Affairs briefed the CCAB on "The Schertz Short" and its efforts to improve communication among the
City Staff. Planning and Development briefed the CCAB on their "What's Developing in Schertz"
website.
Requests and Announcements:
Agenda Item No. 8. Request by Advisory Board Chairman and Board members for items to be placed
on a future Board agenda, The Advisory Board requested the following items be included on future
agendas:
4. Bike to School Day in May.
5. Arbor Day.
6. Adding development to Forest Ridge Park.
Agenda Item No. 9. Announcements by Advisory Board Chairman and members Chairman Johnie
McDow briefed the Board that Buffalo Valley Youth Association (BVYA) opening ceremonies on
March 17, 2018 was a big success and the swim team has started signups. BVYA will be hosting two
tournaments in June and that the Soccer Association for Youth of San Antonio (SAYSAT) and BVYA
partnership is working well. Mr. Jim Fowler announced the next Love Where You Live event will be
held on April 7, 2018 in the Pecan Grove area.
Announcements by Staff:
Ms. Shrum announced that the Friends of Crescent Bend Nature Park have voted to make a donation to
the City to purchase two trash cans and a dog station for Crescent Bend Nature Park.
She updated the Advisory Board on the following events:
7. Nature Discovery Series February 3, 2018, at Crescent Bend Nature Park.
8. Star Party February 3, 2018 at Crescent Bend Nature Park.
9. Birding Walk February 11, 2018 at Crescent Bend Nature Park.
10. Nature Discovery Series — Discover What's Flying, March 3, 2018.
11. Music in the Park — Ravenmoor March 17, 2018 at Pickrell Park.
12. Underwater Egg Hunt March 23, 2018 at Schertz Aquatic Center.
13. Recognition of City employee actions.
Ms. Shrum updated the Advisory Board on New Department initiatives:
14. Easter in the Park March 31, 2018, 9am -lpm at Pickrell Park.
15. Nature Discovery Series - Discover What's Buzzing /Blooming, April 7, 2018, 10-11 am
at Crescent Bend Nature Park.
Movin' on Main April 8, 2018, 12 -4pm Main Street and Pickrell Park.
16. Community Volunteer Fair April 19, 2018, 5:30 -7pm at Schertz Civic Center.
17. Movie in the Park: Dr. Seuss' The Lorax 7 -10pm at Cypress Point Park.
The next Advisory Board meeting will be April 23, 2018.
