04-26-2018 MinutesSCHERTZ HISTORICAL PRESERVATION COMMITTEE MUNICIPAL COMPLEX CONFERENCE ROOM 1400 SCHERTZ PARKWAY, BUILDING #1 Schertz, Texas 78154 MINUTES, THURSDAY, April 26, 2018 Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Chairman Weirtz at 6:30pm. Voting members present: LaDonna Bacon, John Baker, Sue Boissonneault, Lou Foehrkolb, Lynn Foehrkolb, Dean Midlick, Pete Perez, Paul Ringenbach, Elizabeth Strong, Dean Weil tz and Rosalyn Wise. Introduction of Guests and /or New Members Also in attendance: Brian James (from the City of Schertz) Trent Twittero - owner of 528 Main St Noah White - President of Samuel Clemens HS History Club Marc Thornton - Advisor to Samuel Clemens HS History Club Discussion and /or Action Items 1. Minutes - Consideration and/or action regarding the approval of the minutes of the regular meeting of January 29, 2018 and special meeting of March 8, 2018. A motion was made by Lou Foehrkolb and seconded by Pete Perez to approve both sets of minutes. The motion passed unanimously. 2. Main Street Grant Application - Consideration and /or action approving a request for an Historical Incentive Program for the Main Street Area Grant for 528 Main Street. Discussions were held regarding the property owner's desire to be awarded a matching grant for roof repair of his home at 528 Main Street. A motion was made by Paul Ringenbach and seconded by Rosalyn Wise to recommend to City Council the home owner's request for the grant. The motion passed unanimously. 3. Fund Expenditures - Consideration and/or action regarding the submission of members' expense vouchers and approval of fund expenditures. Treasurer Paul Ringenbach reported that there were no expense vouchers submitted. 4. Treasurer's Report - Consideration and/or action regarding book sales activities during the last quarter and other fiscal activities. Treasurer Paul Ringenbach reported quarterly book sales in the amount of $55.89 after taxes were paid. The sales report represents sales of two original history books and one photo history book. The current total balance of sales for the fiscal year to date is $309.91. 5. Publication of the Spring 2018 Newsletter and Remembrances Special Edition Article 2018 -2. Consideration and /or action regarding the publication of the spring 2018 Committee newsletter and the Remembrances Special Edition Article 2018 -2. Chairman Weirtz complimented member John Baker for his writing the article and members Paul Ringenbach and Rosalyn Wise for their efforts in editing the newsletter and Remembrances article. A motion was made to approve the publication of both the newsletter and the Special Edition Aricle 2018 -2. The motion passed unanimously. 6. Schertz Landmark Property/Heritage Neighborhood Designation Nominations - Consideration and /or action regarding Schertz Landmark Property/Heritage Neighborhood designation nominations.. Rosalyn Wise presented the pictorial display developed to document the placement of Landmark Properties within the City of Schertz. Discussion by Brian James followed regarding the status of the proposal to nominate the former Comal Settlement area (north Schertz) as a Heritage Neighborhood. 7. Bibliotech — Biblioboard Project - Consideration and /or action regarding the Committee's membership in the regional Bibliotech — Biblioboard Project. Committee member Elizabeth Strong reported that the Committee's postings to Biblioboard have been completed and are now accessible to the public. 8. Subcommittee Reports — Discussion Only Historian —in a few weeks. Chairman Weirtz reported that the "Looking Back" features continue to be published in Schertz Magazine. He also reported that the City of Schertz is preparing for celebration of the 60th anniversary of the City's incorporation. Chairman Weirtz is researching with the Secretary of State's office the official date of Schertz' incorporation in 1958. More details concerning events for the incorporation celebration are expected to be forthcoming in a few weeks. - Biblioboard - No further discussion Social Media — Elizabeth Strong, Chairperson for the Social Media Subcommittee reported that postings have begun to be placed on the City's Facebook page with links to the City of Schertz Web Page. Chairman Weirtz encouraged committee members to review the City's web page for Committee news and postings and to bring valued Committee involvement to Ms. Strong's attention for posting on social media. - Oral History - Pete Perez, Co- Chairman for the Oral History Subcommittee reported on the progress of the subcommittee. Outreach - Chairman Weirtz has accepted an appointment to the San Antonio Conservation Society's Second Congress event to be held on 2 June. Chairmn Weirtz also reported on the Committee's involvement in the following events: the placement of a Fiesta exhibit at the Senior Center on April 17 that will be on display through the ten days of the Fiesta celebration; attendance at the Clemens High School History Club meeting on April 18; Committee members' involvement in the April 19 City Volunter Fair; Clemens History Club's participation in a Committee sponsored City historic tour on April 21; Chairman Weirtz' participation in a filmed interview with "Lookthinkmake" public relations firm representing Crossvine Development Company as part of Crossvine's oral Schertz history project. The Chairman reported that three locations are currently under consideration for serving as Committee satellite gallery exhibit sites. The sites include: lounge at 500 block on Main St; newly constructed Staybridge Hotel at Schertz Pkwy and 11135; future Guadalupe Annex Building on FM 78. Requests and Announcements 9.
