2015 Fall Remembrances Newsletter 1 Remembrances Newsletter of the Schertz Historical Preservation Committee Fall Edition 2015 . Congratulations to the City of San Antonio for having landed the five San Antonio Spanish Missions on the World Heritage Site Inscription of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The City of Schertz is particularly proud of citizen Paul T. Ringenbach (Ph.D) for having been the primary author of the nomination package that brought the award to San Antonio. Dr. Ringenbach spoke at the October meeting of the Schertz Historical Preservation Committee. Please note the Schertz connection to the missions as reported in our 2015-7 Remembrances Special Edition Article. This quarter’s Committee Remembrances Special Edition Articles include: 2015-6 titled: Historic Preservation Its Worth to the Community; and, 2015-7 titled: Schertz Geography and Current Resident Share Role in San Antonio World Heritage Site Designation. Both articles are attached. The Committee has nominated three Schertz Main Street residences for selection as “Landmark Properties”. The residences are 539 Main Street, 711 Main Street, and 707 Main Street. The nomination packages will be brought before City Council for approval in November 2015. The subcommittee assigned the task of evaluating the possibility of naming Schertz’s Aviation Heights Subdivision as the City’s second “Heritage Neighborhood” has concluded its work and will go before City Council of December 8, 2015 to present its proposal to the council for approval. Citizens of Aviation Heights will be notified of the Committee’s appearance before the Council and may attend if they desire. The 2 designation is solely an honorary recognition and places no restrictions on home or business owners. The Schertz photo history book (Schertz Texas – A Photo History) has been published. The book is 136 pages of Schertz photo history. It is a very attractive and high quality book and is being sold to the public at the Committee’s cost of producing it ($25.00). The book makes a perfect gift for a friend or family member living in Schertz or who once lived in our town. It will be available for purchase at the Schertz Library, Schertz Visitor’s Center, Schertz Senior Center, at City Hall (Water Dept. window) or from any Committee member (Tel. 651-0394). The book surveys (through photos and sketches) Schertz history from 1850 through 2015. It’s a great Christmas gift and a coffee table addition. The Outreach Subcommittee conducted its first student historic Schertz field trip on September 28, 2015. The event was attended by students from Corbett Junior High School, school staff members and a staff member of the Schertz, Cibolo, Universal City Independent School District (SCUCISD). The trip was both interesting and educational. Future field trips will be planned. The Outreach Subcommittee’s restoration/preservation project at the Vineyard Fellowship Church (207 First Street) has been completed and the church building has a new and inspiring look. This church building is a designated Schertz Landmark Property based upon its early construction (sometime in the late 1890s or early 1900s) and its many uses in support of Schertz community life. The Committee has placed many of its paper files in cabinets situated in the Schertz Public Library’s History and Genealogy Room. This cabinet space will be the Committee’s archive repository station. These records/photos will be available to researchers and interested citizens searching for historic information regarding the City of Schertz and/or Comal Settlement. Work continues on digitizing the Committee’s paper files.
