Spring Edition
2016
The Committee is working to procure banners for placement along the perimeter of the Aviation Heights neighborhood in recognition of the neighborhood having been designated as a Schertz “Heritage Neighborhood”. The story of the neighborhood’s history was presented in Remembrances Special Edition Article 2014-7 (Aviation Heights
– Slow to Develop but a Lasting Impact) and in the March edition of Schertz Magazine. A feature article regarding the Committee also appears in the March edition of Schertz Magazine. The Schertz photo history book (Schertz Texas – A Photo History) has been published.
The book is 136 pages of Schertz photo history. It is a very attractive and high quality book and is being sold to the public at the Committee’s cost of producing it ($25.00). The book makes a perfect gift for a friend or family member living in Schertz or who once lived in our town. It will be available for purchase at the Schertz Library, Schertz Visitor’s Center, at City Hall (Water Dept. window) or from any Committee members
(Tel. 651-0394). The book surveys (through photos and sketches) Schertz history from 1850 through 2015. It’s a great coffee table addition. The Committee’s Annual Report was delivered to City Council in early February. The report documents a very successful year for the Committee in terms of achieving its
targeted goals for 2015. New goals have been set forth for 2016 which the Committee is now working on. Three Remembrances Special Edition Articles have been published this quarter and are attached for your reading pleasure. Article 2016-2, The Cibolo Grange; Article 2016-
2
3, National Preservation Month and Local Schertz Response; Article 2016-4, Historic
Preservation of a Natural Kind.
The Outreach Subcommittee has also begun work on a Schertz City History Symposium program being offered free of charge to the public on Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 10:00 am to noon. The program is being offered in recognition of the month
of May being designated as National Preservation Month and as a means of celebrating
the Schertz Historical Preservation Committee’s 10th anniversary. Several topics of local historic interest will be presented to include a virtual tour of Schertz city historical elements. The program will be held at the City Council Chambers building (1400 Schertz Parkway, Bldg. #4).
The Committee’s Outreach Subcommittee continues planning for its second student historic Schertz field trip. The event will involve students from Corbett Junior High School. A separate field trip may be planned for the Clemens High School History Club. School staff members and a staff member of the Schertz, Cibolo, Universal City
Independent School District (SCUCISD) may also undertake a historic city field trip in
early May. A few interesting and meaningful artifacts were donated to the Committee this quarter. One portrait of Sebastian Schertz, founding father of our city, was donated by
the Schertz family along with records of the original Schertz Water Company. Several
photographs of aircraft positioned at Randolph Air Force Base in the early years of its beginnings were donated by Cibolo residents Malford and Vivian Brehm. Newspaper articles and memorandums regarding activities surrounding the development of the Schertz-Seguin Local Government Corporation (SSLGC)(Carrizo water project) dated
from September 1999 to 2010 were donated from the Baldwin family archives (Hal
Baldwin). Thanks to all the families for their contributions. The Committee has donated two monarch butterfly sculptures to the caretakers of two of our city’s garden areas. One was given to the caretakers of at the Guadalupe
County Community Gardens where a butterfly habitat area has recently been put in place
and the other was donated to the caretakers of the Gutierrez Park where a butterfly habitat area has been in place for some time. Unveiling of the two sculptures will occur in May. The Committee participated as a joint sponsor of the Aviation Heights Weekend Clean-
up campaign held April 23 & 24, 2016. The other sponsoring and participating
organizations included the four to five churches belonging to “Faith In Action” grouping, the City of Schertz, and Gutierrez Waste Company. Significant restoration projects were completed on homes and properties in the neighborhood. Thanks to all who participated.
