2017 Summer Remembrances Newsletter 1 Remembrances Newsletter of the Schertz Historical Preservation Committee Summer Edition 2017 , Our committee added two new members during the past quarter, John Baker and LaDonna Bacon while Barbara Hall and Cynthia Palmer left, leaving two vacancies in the fourteen member roster. Publication efforts were focused primarily on the research document titled: Schertz City Council – A Half Century of Service, Looking Back. This publication is a five-chapter history of the activities of the Schertz City Council from 1960 through 2010. We placed a record copy of the publication at the Schertz Public Library for public research and individual copies were given to current City Council members. The quarterly REMBRANCES Special Edition Article 2017-3 , titled: Schertz and the Historic Chisholm/Shawnee Trail, and 2017-4, titled: Schertz, Texas – City of Historic Trails, have been published and are attached to this newsletter. Committee outreach efforts have included involvement with the judging of student essay submissions to the Sons of the Texas Revolution. We participated in the City Volunteer Open House event conducted on April 13, 2017. We also participated in the planning and conduct of the Heritage Neighborhood clean-up campaign held on May 6, 2017. Restoration projects at two of the Committee’s satellite artifacts galleries required temporary removal of historic displays. The Schertz Senior Center began restoration work in early June. Restoration work also began at Clemens High School library in June and the Committee’s two display cabinets had to be cleared for the project. We’ve placed the affected artifacts in storage until the end of the summer when these restoration projects are expected to be completed. 2 May was National Preservation Month. In celebration of the event the Committee participated in a heritage neighborhood clean-up project with other City and volunteer groups from throughout the community. The Committee also developed a briefing for use in support of our outreach program that has as its subject “The Historic Trails of Schertz”. We have already presented it to one community group and is offered to any interested public or private organization that may request a presentation. The book publication project was yet another initiative in celebration of Preservation Month. The submission of two nominees for designation as Landmark Properties to the Schertz City Council rounded out our activities for May. The two properties are situated at 207 First Street (Grapevine Fellowship Church) and 7720 Trainer Hale Road and both properties are among the oldest in our community. An application for a Main Street Restoration Project Grant has been submitted by the owner of the property at 513 Main Street (former Schertz State Bank, circa 1913). Our Committee examined the application and recommended approval by City Council. City staff is in the process of ordering additional banners for display in the Aviation Heights Heritage Neighborhood. There are now ten banners hanging along streets that form the perimeter of the neighborhood. The Schertz photo history book remains on sale at the Schertz Public Library, the Schertz Visitors Center and the City Hall Water Department at a price of $25. The City of San Antonio’s Office of Historic Preservation will sponsor a Historic Homeowner Fair on Saturday, August 26, 2017. The Fair will be held at the Pearl Stable from 9:30 a.m to 3:00 p.m. Over fifty exhibitors will be present. Lectures relating to home preservation and financial assistance sources will be presented.
