08-18 LAB MinutesSCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING August 6, 2 018 Members Present: Patti Paulson, Laura Wilson, Joanne Ward, Neota Brady, Carol Cyr, Margaret Riley, Cindy Vigil, Ruth Tienor, Dawn Figueras, Juan Thorn, Shonale Burke, and Letticia Sever. Melissa Uhlhorn, Library Director. HEARING OF RESIDENTS: None CALL TO ORDER: Patti Paulson called the meeting to order at 6:33 p.m. REGULAR AGENDA: 1. Minutes: Consideration and /or action regarding the approval of the minutes of the June 4, 2018 meeting. Ruth Tienor moved to accept the June 2018 Minutes. Margaret Riley seconded the motion. Motion carried. The June 4, 2018 Minutes were approved with 1 minor correction. 2. Treasurer's Reports: Consideration and /or action regarding the approval of the May 2018 Treasurer's Reports. The May 2018 Treasurer's Report reflected income of $1,379.94 and expenses of $186.42 leaving a balance of $24,987.80 in the cash account. We also reviewed the March and April Adjusted Treasurers Reports. The adjustments explain the difference to the ending balance of April to beginning balance for May report. Juan Thorn moved to accept the May 2018 Treasurer's Reports as presented. Joanne Ward seconded the motion. The motion carried. The May 2018 Treasurer's Reports were approved. 3. Librarian Report: Melissa Uhlhorn reported on the following items: Melissa welcomed Letticia Sever, the newest alternate board member. She also explained Sandy Keiser has moved to New Braunfels and will no longer serve on the Library Advisory Board or the Library Foundation Board. The council is interviewing for a 2nd alternate. Lots of programs, visitors, and volunteers. AB students and Honor Society volunteered. Melissa presented slide presentation (attached). - Scholastic Book Fair resulted in $500 worth of books to the Library. - Reading and programs tracked using Bean Stack, which also emails tips to help kids improve reading. - Foundation mini -golf event cleared approximately $6,000. Other local libraries are interested and if others use it, the cost of set -up will decrease. Funds raised will be used to refurbish benches and tables in the court yard. 4. Bookstore Report: Committee reported on the following items: General Operations: - Bookstore Sale date is set for October 26 -27, 2018. Cash or check will be accepted. Bookstore gift certificates will be available in $5 increments. Certificates will be embossed to help eliminate fraudulent copying of certificates. - Dawn Figueras took over the consignment of books. Two new volunteers will attend orientation tomorrow. - Book store will be closed Nov 21 -24 for Thanksgiving and Dec 22- Jan6 for Christmas /New Year. 5. Committees of Committees Advisory Board(CCAB) Update - Shonale Burke explained that the CCAB will now meet quarterly. The next meeting is September 19, 2018. DISCUSSION & POSSIBLE ACTION: 6. Library Board Officer Election: - After some discussion, the current officers agreed to stay in their positions. Ruth Tienor moved the board approved the appointment of Patti Dilworth as Chair, Patti Paulson as Vice - Chair, Laura Wilson as Treasurer, and Shonale Burke as Secretary. Shonale Burke seconded the motion. The motion carried. The officers were approved. Joanne Ward will serve as Book Store Manager and Shonale Burke will represent the Library Board on the CCAB. ANNOUNCEMENTS: 7. Items by the Library Board Members: Briefing on the following items: - Correspondence received: Thank you for mini -golf support from the Library Foundation. - Announcements: Juan Thorn is resigning from Library Board. He expressed gratitude for the board and thanks for the support.
