01-19 LAB MinutesSCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING January 7, 2019 Members Present: Melissa Uhlhorn, Brian James, Ken Bauer, Margaret Riley, Carol Cyr, Robert Lopez, Letticia Sever, Patti Paulson, Laura Wilson, Joanne Ward, Ruth Tienor, Christine Bryan, Dawn Figueras and Patti Dilworth 1. Minutes: Consideration and /or action regarding the approval of the minutes of the November 5, 2018 meeting. Ruth Tienor moved to accept the November 5, 2018 minutes as presented. Patti Paulson seconded the motion. Motion carried. The November 5, 2018 minutes were accepted as presented. 2. Treasurer's Reports: Consideration andlor action regarding the approval of October 2018 and November 2018 Treasurer's Reports. .October Treasurer's Report: Bookstore sales were $1,300.12, Interest earned $46.40, Misc. funds .61, Credit Card sales $143.45, the total is $1,490.61. The Distribution was $126.44. The Cash Account has $26,909.45 and the Investment Account has $46,446.53 in the accounts. November Treasurer's Report: Bookstore sales were $1,320.51, Bag Sale 1,308.00, Interest earned $46.67, Misc. funds .48, Credit Card sales $77.80, the total is $2,753.46. The Distribution was $127.44. The Cash Account has $29,535.47 and the Investment Account has $46,539.01 in the accounts. Patti Paulson moved to accept both the October 2018 and November 2018 Treasurer's Reports as presented. Margaret Riley seconded the motion. The motion carried. The October 2018 and November 2018 Treasurer's reports were accepted as presented. 3. Librarian's Report: Librarian will report on the following items: General Operation: - Melissa Uhlhorn discussed the library cards will be active longer. The library cards will be good for 2 years. The number of cards being renewed will be decreased. -The library welcomed two new employees. -The Ice Cream cart located in front of the library makes a donation to the library. -Crossvine and the Schertz Historic Committee have partnered up to do an oral presentation project over the history of the City of Schertz. The library is hoping with the help of the genealogy to host the viewing of the presentation at the library toward the end of February or March. -The Bookstore Gift Certificates are also being sold in the library. -A monitor has been installed at the entrance to the library. It will run a loop of upcoming library events. -Winter reading safari, podcast discussion with Natalie, crochet for adults, scrapbooking class, and quilt as you go class are a few of the adult programs. -A book challenge has been made towards a book. We discussed the protocol that a challenge will need to go through and what we as the LAB will need to assist with. -The Library Foundation is in need of members. They are looking for 2 to 3 members. If interested please fill out an application and turn it in to Lizzi Bertoia. -Natalie Shultz is looking for a few volunteers to navigate the new website. Bookstore Report: Committee reported on the following items: General Operation: - A lot of great donations - Next book sale will be March 28-30. Mark your calendars. 5. CCAB (Committee of Committees Advisory Board) Update: Shona Burke/Brian James I Brian James presented the CCAB meeting report. The CCAB will meet quarterly. Brian James highlighted a few areas of interest. The new Schertz City Manager, Mark Browne, began his new position. I 03M 6. Readh)g Clubs- Discussion and possible action on funding for Winter, Summer & Year Round reading clubs. Lizzi Bertoia and April Toman asked for $12,000 to cover the following programs: Winter Reading programs $500.00 Summer Reading theme "Space" $5,000.00 Book Nerd Year Round Challenge $6,500.00 Ruth Tienor moved to give the library $12,000.00 for the reading clubs. Laura Wilson seconded the motion. The motion carried. The library will receive $12,000.00 for the reading programs. 7. Library Materials - Discussion and possible action on library materials funding for fiscal year 2019. The LAB discussed moving $10,000 from the investment account to regular /cash account for library materials. $6,000.00 will be used to replenishing the weeded books in nonfiction, graphic novels, early readers and Spanish collections. $4,000.00 for Kanopy a streaming video site. Kanopy has 30,000 movies, documentaries, how - to -video and shows. It will be a 1 -year trial period for $4,000,00. Dawn Figueras made a motion to move $10,000.00 from the investment account to the regular /cash account for library materials. Patti Paulson seconded the motion. The motion carried. The LAB approved moving $10,000.00 from the investment account to the regular /cash account for library materials. ANNOUNCEMENTS: 8. Items by the Library Board Members: Briefing and discussion on the following items: - Correspondence received by the Secretary: None received -Other announcements by Library Board Members: Robert Lopez is the ghostwriter for Beno Moore a biography about his life it is titled "Urban Sheppard ". They are currently working on book number 2, "American Dream." Robert will donate a signed copy to the library. -Call for items to be included on the next agenda: None.
