The Committee welcomes the City’s newly hired Assistant City Manager,
Charles Kelm. Mr. Kelm is a retired Air Force Colonel with impressive
leadership and management experience while serving in the Air Force and while
occupying leadership positions in civilian industry. He is an undergraduate of
Texas A&M University (civil engineering) and holds two Masters Degrees
(Science & Business Management).
The Committee also extends a warm welcome to two new Committee
members joining us beginning at our July 2019 meeting. The new members are
Daniel Bourgeois and Sabrina Allen.
The Heritage Neighborhood designation nomination for the former
community of Comal Settlement has been placed on hold pending the outcome of
a Texas Legislature House Bill, which will outline guidance for municipalities’
designation of historic districts/neighborhoods.
Remembrances Special Edition Articles 2019-3 was published and is
attached to the newsletter.
The newly constructed Staybridge Hotel, situated along Schertz Parkway at
Highway 35, has decorated its conference center area with 26 historic photos of
early Schertz (see partial photo display below).
City staff have assisted the Committee with the development of two historic
art exhibits that will eventually be placed as interior décor at the City’s newest
fire station situated at the South end of town. The art pieces are paintings (World
War I depictions) by artist Dean Fawcett (see Remembrances Special Edition
2019-2) of what are titled as “The Pilot” and “The Navigator”. Larger scale
versions of the same art pieces hang in the rotunda of the Headquarters
Randolph Joint Base Administrative Headquarters.

The Committee continues to follow the progress of the Schertz Main Street Committee in its pursuit of restoration/renovation initiatives for the Main
Street area. To date, the Main Street Committee has evaluated the many issues
that complicate immediate movement on the project. Certain initiatives have
been offered by the Historical Preservation Committee. A parking area has been
set in place at Main and First Street and sidewalk/lighting enhancements are
being scheduled. Additional enhancements are being planned. This month’s
Schertz Magazine discusses the Main Street Project.
The Schertz history books (narrative and photo book) remain on sale at
the Schertz Visitors Center, the Schertz Public Library and at City Hall (Water
Dept.).
