DISCUSSION AND/OR ACTION ITEMS: 1. Minutes – Consideration and/or action regarding the approval of the minutes of the regular meeting of January 28, 2021. Dean Weirtz expressed appreciation on behalf of the committee to Cyndi Simmons for the detailed minutes. • Motion made by Dean Weirtz and seconded by Rosalyn Wise to approve minutes as written. Motion passed unanimously. • Introductions – Committee members introduced themselves to the newest committee member. 2. Fund Expenditures – Consideration and/or action regarding the submission of member expense vouchers and approval of fund expenditures. • Dean Weirtz has a submission of a $60 voucher for payment of the upcoming luncheon (to be held in August) at The Chamber for non-profits to participate in. We will have two representatives (Dean Weirtz and Frenchy Bourgeois). • Motion made by Chuck Reynolds and Rosalyn Wise seconded to approve the $60 expenditure for the SHPC to sponsor a table at The Chamber luncheon. Motion passed unanimously. • Rosalyn Wise asked about the banner expenditure. She asked if we know how much the banners cost. Brian James indicated that he would find out and report at the next meeting. 3. Book Sales Report – Consideration and/or action regarding book sale activities during the last quarter and other fiscal activities. • Book sales this quarter were $64.67 in sales (3 yellow books and 1 photo book). • Looking to have the ISBN number available for Kindles and Amazon Fire. • How are the books being introduced to people now? Word of mouth, occasionally do an article in Schertz Magazine. Will have them for sale at the Chamber Luncheon in August and they are for sale at the Library, the Water Department, and the Visitors Center. It is also mentioned in the newsletter. Monty Gonzales commented that his Page 2 of 4 wife is a realtor and suggested that she could suggest to the various brokers that the book can be purchased to give to families new to our community. Something similar had been done in the past – a realtor had given a donation to the group and in turn they provided them with several books to be given away to new residents. The yellow books sell for $15.00 and the photo books sell for $25.00. We could sell them to a realty company for a quantity rate. It was also suggested that we could sell more in digital format. 4. Publication of the Spring 2021 Committee Newsletter and Remembrances Special Edition Article 2021-2. Consideration and/or action regarding the publication of the Committee Spring 2021 Newsletter and the Remembrances Special Edition Articles 2021-2. • Dean Weirtz has a concern because the draft he sent had two paragraphs that were identical and nobody caught it. He is concerned that no one is reading them. Many members indicated that they did read it, however, did not see that error. • Motion made by Rosalyn Wise motioned and John Baker seconded to approve the publication and articles. Motion passed unanimously. 5. Schertz Landmark Property/Heritage Neighborhood Designation Nominations – Consideration and/or action regarding Schertz Landmark Property/Heritage Neighborhood designation nominations. • Dean Weirtz reports he spoke with Jerome Patterson. He owns a property on 482 (parallels Hwy 35, take Schwab Road exit). His property dates back to the early 1900s. What’s important about his property is that he has a piece of architecture on his property which was an original home made out of limestone and it’s very interesting to see. He has invited our committee to go out and look at the property. He will schedule the tour for a Saturday and will email everyone with the date/time. Dean also suggested that they also go to the nationally recognized historic church on 482 on the same day. Rosalyn Wise suggested that we have a photographer to take pictures as well (possibly Public Affairs). 6. Consideration of a “Time Capsule” for development by the SHPC – Consideration and/or action regarding the development of a “Time Capsule”. • Frenchy Bourgeois advised that Howard Alperin could not be here tonight, however, wanted Frenchy to have everyone bring the artifacts to set in the capsule in the caboose. Frenchy would like to table that and continue it when Howard is present to defend his project. Rosalyn reports that Howard would like to have the opening of the capsule at the 100th anniversary celebration, which would occur in 2058. Much discussion ensued and it was ultimately decided that this discussion will be tabled until the next meeting. 7. Cibolo Valley Community Museum Association (CVCMA) & Schertz Historical Preservation Committee (SHPC) Collaborations – Consideration and/or action regarding collaboration activities of CVCMA and SHPC pertaining to historical preservation matters within the Schertz and surrounding community areas. • Dean Weirtz reports that the City of Schertz has produced a sign that has a QR code on it so people can scan and view the video, however, the sign has not been installed. 8. Subcommittee Reports • Biblioboard/Social Media – Chairman Bourgeois has found that we are up to 13 likes, 0 comments on the caboose picture on the cover of Schertz Magazine on social media. • Rosalyn Wise asked again for a new aerial view of Highway 35 before the new highway construction begins for historical purposes. Frenchy Bourgeois advised he will make it happen. Page 3 of 4 • Historian – John Baker’s term is coming to an end and he’s not going to renew. He has been responsible for submitting information to the Schertz Magazine in November which includes one section on Texas history and one section on Schertz history. The committee will assist whoever takes the role. Rosalyn Wise volunteered to take on that role. REQUESTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS: 9. Request by Committee Members that items be placed on a future agenda. • How to add the ISBN to our book discussion. • Podcast update. • Chamber of Commerce luncheon discussion. • Frenchy Bourgeois would like to put on next meeting’s agenda that he would like to have the SHPC do something every year that requires zero to no effort on our part – hosting a car show. We can have it in front of the pizza joint on Main Street and close off half the street. We could have food trucks and possibly have trophies. Would like to see this occur in early fall. Need to look into more details such as location, insurance, police and fire protection, etc. 10. Requests by Committee Members to City Manager and Staff for information. • No requests. 11. Announcements by Committee Members • Frenchy Bourgeois presented John Baker with a proclamation for his contribution to the SHPC. We appreciate everything he’s done for the committee. • Brian James was asked how Movin on Main event went. Brian reported that they would have liked to have seen more people attend as well as more vendors and sponsors. All in all, everyone that attended had a good time. We’re hoping to grow this event and look forward to the 4th of July Jubilee being a huge event. • Brian James also reports that we will probably meet in the Bob Andrews Conference Room for the next meeting. • Brian James also reports on the great work the EMS/EOC team has done on the vaccination clinics. We are now to the point where we aren’t filling up the clinics so if you know anyone needing/wanting the vaccine, they are available. We are also going to Clemens and Steele tomorrow to do mini clinics for students over the age of 16 (with the permission of their parent/guardian). We will also have clinics next week. • Another email will be sent stressing the importance of these meetings that only occur once per quarter and the need for notifying Dean or Frenchy of an absence with a valid excuse. ADJOURNMENT At 8:03 PM, motion made by Dean Weirtz to adjourn the meeting and seconded by Chuck Reynolds. Motion passed unanimously to adjourn the meeting.
