The Cibolo Valley Community Museum Association (CVCMA) continues, under
the leadership of SHPC officers Dean Weirtz and Elizabeth Strong, planning the
development of an historic caboose railroad car static display feature situated at
1052 FM 78 (former Riedel Furniture Store parking lot). Also being planned is
the placement of historic décor for the inside common areas of the soon to be
renovated former furniture store building. Donations of historic artifacts and/or
photos for use in either venue are being accepted. Volunteers who might like to
assist with these projects can contact Dean Weirtz, telephone: 210-651-0394. The
CVCMA has submitted a grant request to the Guadalupe Valley Electrical
Cooperative (GVEC) for a GVEC Power Up Grant to help cover the cost of the
train caboose restoration.
The Committee continues its communication with our French partners in
Reidisheim, France. Two communications were received in December 2019.
At their January 7, 2020 meeting, the City Council approved the nominations of
Howard Alperin and Will Soto to fill the Historical Preservation Committee seats
vacated by former members Lou and Lynn Foehrkolb. Mr. Alperin has worked in
sales, education, juvenile probation, and social work and is also a volunteer with
Habitat for Humanity. Mr. Soto has worked in operations management for
several furniture retailers and undertaken numerous renovations as a painter-
roofer and general contractor, including the renovation of the “Landmark”
designated home at 603 Main Street in Schertz. We welcome both candidates to
the Historical Preservation Committee.
Committee officer nominations for calendar year 2020 were received and
Voting resulted in the selection of Elizabeth Strong as Committee Chairman and
Dean Weirtz as Vice Chairman.
The Schertz history books (narrative and photo book) remain on sale at
