to Cyndi Simmons for the detailed minutes.
• Rosalyn Wise offered the following corrections:

o Page 10, Need end quote after “contents of the guidebook”.
o Page 14, “Motion passed unanimously”. Change to “Motion passed with one

o Motion made by Judith Williams and seconded by Pete Perez to approve minutes
with above corrections. Motion passed unanimously.

vouchers and approval of fund expenditures.
• None reported.
3. Book Sales Report – Consideration and/or action regarding book sale activities during the last
quarter and other fiscal activities.
• One yellow book was sold this quarter -- $13.85 ($15.00 total, but $1.15 goes to the
city).
• Rosalyn Wise reports that she bought a book at the visitor’s center recently. Dean
Weirtz remarked that it will appear in next quarter’s sales.

2022-1, and Committee Annual Report for 2021 – Consideration and/or action regarding the

• Dean Weirtz reports that he received corrections/amendments from committee
members and has made those changes. Asked if there were any further changes and no
one offered any additional comments.
• Dean Weirtz also reported that one of the documents is the “Cibolo Valley Mid-Century
– The Decade of the 1950’s” and this document will be placed in the high school and city
libraries around the area as well as sent to all our addressees who receive our
publications and the historical museum in New Braunfels.
• Dean Weirtz asked if there were any changes/amendments for the Annual Report. He
commented that for those who haven’t been around for the annual reporting, we do
this every January to let the City Council know what we’ve accomplished during the year.
We only send them the summary page of the document. Rosalyn Wise asked if it has
already been submitted to Council and Dean Weirtz replied that we haven’t sent it to
them yet and won’t until it has been approved the committee.
• At this time Dean Weirtz also recognized Rosalyn Wise for submitting the 12 “Looking
Back” articles for the 2022 Schertz Magazines. Rosalyn Wise confirmed that she sent
the articles in December for the 2022 Schertz Magazine publications. She was asked to
pare down the articles as they were too lengthy and she asked that they change the font
to accommodate the content. She had sent the articles to the committee members and
received feedback. She took information from the Schertz, Texas “A Photo History”
book. Next year – for 2023 – she is suggesting that we ask citizens for memories of
Schertz. Her vision is to give the City of Schertz residents interesting and factual
information. If you come across anyone who has been here their whole life, ask them
to submit an article. Tricia Whitman gave her an article about her tribal nation so that
will be published in November 2022 for American Native Month. She is taking the
months and incorporating articles surrounding that month’s national recognition, i.e.
Black History. She is looking for articles for Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month as
well.
o Dean Weirtz commented that she may want to visit the Senior Center and visit
with folks there that can assist with this project.
o Miguel Vazquez asked if she is aware of any Schertz descendants now that are
still in the area. Dean Weirtz replied that there are one are two and that we’ve
had some visitors with the Schertz last name – two different families. They are
from Illinois and Alabama. They are looking into whether they have a direct
relationship to our families. We had a function here and nearly a dozen folks
came who had some kind of connection to the Schertz name.
• Dean Weirtz reports on the articles regarding the pandemic. It deals with four aspects
of the pandemic: 1. National Response; 2. State of Texas Response; 3. County Response;
and 4. City Response. The National Response is continuing to progress as it goes through
Omicron. The State Response continues to progress as they continue to promote the
various antibody treatments. County and City are pretty much closed down, with the
exception of providing advice if anyone wants advice on what’s happening, but they
most often refer them to the State Health Department. As soon as the National and
State activity declares that the pandemic is over, that’s when this publication will close
and he hopes it will be in the next couple of months.
o Rosalyn Wise asked if he was doing all of the writing. Dean Weirtz responded,
yes, that he’s doing all of the writing. He never opened it up because he knew
Page 3 of 4
what a task it is to be continually researching, keeping your eye open, and having
the sources as to where we’re at on this thing.
• Motion made by Paul Ringenbach and Rosalyn Wise seconded to approve the newletter,
the remembrance article, and the annual report. Motion passed unanimously.
5. Consideration of a “Time Capsule” for development by the SHPC – Consideration and/or action
regarding the development of a “Time Capsule”.
• Dean Weirtz reports that at the last meeting, the process was approved. He then
presented a slide presentation regarding the information to be included in the time
capsule (See Attached). At this time, Dean Weirtz’s comments regarding the
presentation became inaudible.
o Paul Ringenbach asked that the presentation be sent to everyone for editing.
o Judith Williams asked if there was a deadline and Dean Weirtz replied that the
deadline is at our next meeting. She also asked if the schools had submitted
anything and they have not.
o Dean Weirtz is placing current currency in the capsule as well – 2017 quarters
and a $1 bill.
o Rosalyn Wise has an iPhone shell and Covid test and possibly a mask to submit.
o Miguel Vazquez suggests that, if possible, we put current senior class photos in
there as well.
6. Cibolo Valley Community Museum Association (CVCMA) & Schertz Historical Preservation
Committee (SHPC) Collaborations – Consideration and/or action regarding collaboration
activities of CVCMA and SHPC pertaining to historical preservation matters within the Schertz
and surrounding community areas.
• Dean Weirtz reports that the only collaboration we are currently working on is a display
at the First United Bank by HEB. They are putting an exhibit in their bank with murals of
historical Schertz. The committee should be receiving invitations to the Open House
when it is complete – sometime in March or April.
7. Subcommittee Reports
• Historian – Rosalyn Wise has already reported on the “Looking Back” articles for Schertz
magazine.
o Miguel Vazquez commented that there was a question on the Seiler Cemeteries
about whether they were Texas Historical Cemeteries and they both are. Would
like to see our committee assist with obtaining the historical cemetery notation
for other cemeteries that would qualify. It doesn’t take that much work and
some are pretty small. Dean Weirtz advised for him to look at our cemetery
journals that we produced several years ago where everything was
photographed and identified for placement. Miguel Vazquez responded that it
is a matter of sending that information to the Texas Historical Commission and
they will give an official medallion. Dean Weirtz also remarked that at the last
meeting we discussed the eventual development of a trail to at least two or three
cemeteries.
• Outreach – No further comments.
8. Updates from Staff – Consideration and/or action regarding the updates from City Staff.
• Dean Weirtz reports that City Council and Staff are still progressing on the Main Street
project.
o Brian James reports that we have a tentative meeting date set at the end of this
month with just the Main Street Committee and Dean Weirtz as the Historical
Page 4 of 4
representative to go over a couple of schematics that the consultant has
prepared so we can get feedback and move forward.
o Dean Weirtz commented that there was much discussion at the last meeting
regarding all of the automobiles that are parked along Main Street so the City is
trying to resolve that issue.
REQUESTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:
9. Request by Committee Members that items be placed on a future agenda.
• Rosalyn Wise suggests the following topics for a future agenda:
o Small Pow Wow discussion for educational purposes
o Review of SHPC by-laws
o Tours for cemeteries
o Tours for history
o Updates on trails
o January election for positions? Nominations for positions
o Car show
• Dean Weirtz commented that the vote last meeting for the Pow Wow was 4-4. There
wasn’t a vote that said we would pursue the Pow Wow idea. Rosalyn Wise responded
that 4-4 wasn’t a no and that it was understood that we would revisit the smaller Pow
Wow. Dean Weirtz responded that we were also waiting for Tricia Whitman to make a
small presentation to the committee. Rosalyn Wise also remarked that these items
need to be placed on future agendas so they don’t get lost or forgotten and should be
put on there until the topics are finalized, resolved, or completed. Rosalyn Wise also
commented that on page 13 of the minutes Tricia Whitman will be put on the agenda.
• Miguel Vazquez suggests the following topic for a future agenda:
o Unveiling of the Texas Historical Marker at Schertz-Cibolo Cemetery in the fall.
• Dean Weirtz reminded that we haven’t stopped restoring the locations of the historic
neighborhood on 1st Street. The Parks Department (Lauren Shrum) has promised that
in March or April, a contractor will come and clear all the rubble at the corner.
10. Requests by Committee Members to City Manager and Staff for information.
• No requests.
11. Announcements by Committee Members
• Rosalyn Wise requests submission of more information for the Car Show Guidebook so
it will be documented in preparation for this year’s car show.
