Call To Order
The meeting was called to order at 6:30pm by chairman Miguel Vazquez at 6:30pm
1. Minutes – The minutes for the 4/27/2023 meeting were approved as presented.
Old Business
2. City Proclamation
Barbara Hall and Miguel Vazquez summarized information regarding the proclamation
of National Historic Preservation Month that was given by the city. Numerous positive
comments were made by several people in attendance. Pictures with Mayor Gutierrez,
city council and members of SHPC were taken. This may have been the first time
Preservation Month was proclaimed by the city and SHPC. A copy of the proclamation
will be kept for the SHPC archives.
3. Schertz-Cibolo Cemetery Tour
Roz Wise and Miguel Vazquez gave an update on the Tour which was held in
conjunction with Preservation Month. There were approximately 125 guests over the
four-hour period. Guests enjoyed mariachi music, visited vendor information booths
and the Samuel Clemens Bison Brass Band also performed. SHPC had donated $1100
toward the cost of the Tour, and Miguel Vazquez submitted receipts of expenses. Roz
Wise stated we sold three books, and she made contact with potential candidates for
our committee.
4. Clemens HS Landmark Dedication 5-17-23
Miguel Vazquez summarized the dedication. This was held at the entrance foyer of the
high school. Speakers included Mark Thornton, sponsor of the history club, Mayor
Ralph Gutierrez and Miguel Vazquez, chair SHPC. Guests in attendance included city
staff, SHPC committee members, school board members, teachers, and the principal of
the school. History club students took turns reading a portion of the proclamation. This
was a successful dedication, and the next step will be to create the plaque regarding the
landmark designation. Also, a copy of the proclamation will be asked from the city for
SHPC archives.
5. Office 365 Account/IT Access/Sharepoint (All)
Minimal discussion. Waiting on what the city can provide regarding space for digital
storage capabilities.
NEW BUSINESS
6. Participation In City Events. (All)
Plans are in progress to participate in the July 4th Jubilee. Miguel Vazquez stated he
registered SHPC for the parade event. We will have a line of cars and hopefully we can
use vintage cars as well as trucks where kids and others can sit and show off costumes.
Plan is to participate with an informational booth as well at Pickrell Park. We will need
to purchase a tent, table, chairs and automobile magnets. Budget for this will be
approximately $2k.
7. Bylaws Subcommittee (All)
Chris Hormel is working on the revisions. All members gave their input regarding the
verbiage regarding dismissal and voluntary resignation from the committee.
Discussion centered on notification to the Chair and what constituted acceptable
absences. Chris will edit and re-write the language in the bylaws for further
review at our next meeting
8. Publication Subcommittee (Roz Wise, coordinator)
Articles have been submitted to the Schertz Magazine for the rest of the year. If any
need to be revised, this would need to be done at least two months in advance to meet
the magazines deadlines. “Remembrance” articles are on the city’s website, however,
are not easily navigable for the public to access. One improvement would be to give
the title of the article in addition to the date of publication.
9. Landmark Properties/Cemeteries Subcommittee
No new information
10. Main St Restoration Subcommittee
No new information. Check with City Schedule for next city council subcommittee
meeting.
11. Need for Secretary and Treasurer
Miguel Vazquez noted that as we update our bylaws as well as policies and procedures,
we will need a secretary to document our minutes as well as a treasurer to track our
income and expenditures. All expenditures are initially approved by SHPC and
forwarded to city council for final approval. Barbara Hall and Roz Wise were suggested
for secretary and treasurer. No vote was taken at this time until the bylaws are
updated.
12. Business Cards for Committee Members (Miguel Vazquez)
Our immediate goal is to be more active in city events, thereby promoting our
committee and having more exposure to the citizens of Schertz. We also want to be
more active in recruiting new people. Business cards help with introductions and will
make it easier for the public to follow-up with us. Motion was made by Chris Hormel
and seconded by Barbara Hall to have cards printed for each committee member.
Motion was passed unanimously. Will forward information to Cyndi Simmons to order
this item through the city.
Next Meeting – Thursday, June 22, 2023, 6:30pm, Schertz Public Library
Adjournment 7:45pm due to library closure
