SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES
The LAB met on June 4, 2007 with the following members present:

Minutes: Minutes for the May meeting were presented. Patti moved to accept as corrected and
Carl seconded. Motion passed.
Treasurer's Report: Laura presented the April report. Carl moved to approve and Margaret
seconded. Motion passed.
Citizen Comments: none
Librarians' Reports:
· Stats were as follows:
circulation - 23,513 patrons -15,428 computer usage - 2,152 info questions -739
story time -778 cards issued - 372 new; 264 renewals (cards are being purged)
Stats are 5.5% higher than last May and 7% higher for the year.
· The application period for the clerk position has closed. Interviews will begin soon.
. On the 25th, all circulation info was lost for the day. There was a corrupted file. Most of
the info can be recreated and much will resolve itself within 2 weeks.
· Gail, Melissa, Nicki and the city IT contractor met with 3M representative to discuss
RFID technology. Two items discussed were self-check technology where patron can
check in/out books and check-in slot scan. Cost for a new system would be $130,000-
$150,000 to retag, have 3 self-check stations, and also check-in slot with 2-3 pads.
· Summer Reading Program has begun. On-line registration was lower than expected.
· Twelve teens have signed up for the new volunteer program.
· Read Off the Fine was used by only 2 children.
· As an outreach program, Nicki went to LaPetite Academy to read to the children.
· Approximately 120-130 attended the ice cream social and movie. The movie was The
Music Man.
· A demonstration of Viking life (e.g. combat skills, carving long bows) was presented by
the Society for Creative Anachronism.
· A Lego design contest will be held during the summer.
Community Services Director's Report:
· Margaret requested another trash can be placed by the library.
Council Liaison's Report:
. Nothing at this time.
Committee Reports:
· Book Store -- Ruth, Margaret, and Mary visited the New
Braunfels bookstore to get ideas for the bookstore in the new library.
Update on new library building project
· There have been 3 meetings with the architects in May.
· The architects visited the library to see furnishings that we have and observed the work
flow. · Soon they will do a design presentation to the city council.
Update on Board member findings on library bookstore furnishings:
. Melissa has shared suggestions with architects.
Update on float work days:
. Work day will be Friday, June 15th at 9 a.m.
Discussion on fund-raising ideas:
. Ideas included were a multi-level funding raising approach with small and large fund
raisers, buy a shelf, buy a paver, and popsicles at the pool.
Items by Library Board members
. More help is needed in the bookstore.
· We will have a collection of vintage books to sell in the future.
. A changing table is needed in the bathroom.
Laura made the motion to adjourn. Patti seconded. Motion carried.
