SCHERTZ PUBLIC LffiRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES
The LAB met on August 6, 2007 with the following members present:

Guest: David Harris, Assistant City Manager
Minutes: Minutes for the June meeting and the July 23rd special called meeting were presented.
Patti moved to accept and Neota seconded both minutes. Motion passed.
Treasurer's Report: Laura presented the May report. Mary moved to approve and Patti
seconded. Motion passed.
Citizen Comments: none
Librarians' Reports:
· June stats were as follows:
circulation - 30,701 patrons -18,435 computer usage - 2,191 info questions - 780
story time - 1,422 cards issued - 284 new; 619 renewals
The June circulation number was an all time high. Stats are 3% higher than last June and
6.7% higher for the year.
· July stats were as follows:
Circulation - 30,384 patrons - 17,774 computer usage - 2,459 story time -1,221
cards issued - 286 new; 493 renewals
· Nicki recorded 325 volunteer hours from 25 teen volunteers.
· The Water Party was attended by 98 children. Due to rain, the party was moved inside
with fishing as the activity.
· Approximately 16 attended the After Hour Teen Party.
· August 18th is the Lego Design Contest for ages 3 and up.
· The reindeer quilt has been entered in the Greater SA Quilt Show held at the Live Oak
Civic Center on September 14-16.
· August is a planning month for programs.
· Summer Reading Program had 913 participants from ages birth to 16. The number of
attendees was down from last year - possible reasons are too crowded, inadequate
parking. Approximately $25,880 was given in incentives and prizes. One hundred
thirty-three free books were given out. Program highlights included the magician, radio
program, and monopoly tournament.
· In August the library phone number is changing to 619-1700.
· New Computer monitors are being installed.
· New clerk has not been hired at this time.
· The library float won the Judge's Award.

Community Services Director's Report:
· Pickets are being kicked out at the Playscape.
Council Liaison's Report:
· Council has instructed the architects to proceed with the new library project.
Committee Reports:
· Meeting is needed to reviewlupdate agenda format and new board member selection in
the LAB By-Laws.
Update on new library building project
· Planning has moved in the detail design phase.
· Hopefully project will go out for bids in December and construction can begin in
January.
New Process for Interview and Appointment to City Boards and Commissions
· A volunteer application for the LAB must be submitted to city hall. Members ofthe city
council committee will conduct interviews.
Items by Library Board members
· Pops for Pages program earned $88. Popsicles were sold at the city pool on Tuesdays
and Thursdays this summer. Thanks to Simone who organized and worked this
program.
Mary made the motion to adjourn. Simone seconded. Motion carried.
The next LAB meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 10,2007 at 7:00 p.m.
