LAB 01-07-2008 SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES The LAB met on January 7, 2008 with the following members present: Ruth Tienor Margaret Riley Simone Bailey Laura Wilson Neota Brady Carol Cyr Mary McAllister Melissa Uhlhorn Gail Douglas Michael Carpenter Guest: Bob Brockman Minutes: Simone moved to accept the minutes, and Laura seconded. Motion carried. Treasurer's Report: Margaret moved to accept the report, and Simone seconded. Motion carried. Citizen Comments: Mr. Brockman commented that he liked the penny barrel project. Also he inquired as to when the bid award would be on the city council agenda. Librarians' Reports: . Stats were as follows: circulation - 19,915 patrons - 11,627 computer usage - 1859 info questions - 763 cards - 253 (new) 167 (renewal) story time -180 (no story time last 2 wks. of Dec.) . Winter Reading Club has begun. . There is family story time on Saturdays. High School students are planning and facilitating this story time. . Nicki is working on a Y AG (Youth Advocacy Group of ALA) grant. She is requesting $450 for youth music. The Tweens and Teens program is not well attended so hopefully the grant for music would help attendance. . Sandra Deady is a new full-time employee. There is a part-time position open. . The Giving Tree will be displayed all year. . Melissa has been talking to city personnel about a mural in the new library. . Nicki shared the photos from the "Get Caught Reading" contest. All photos were taken by adults. A winner was selected. Community Services Director's Report: . This week the Kramer house will be moved across the street from its original location. The Chamber of Commerce will have their office there. Council Liaison's Report: . Michael enjoyed portraying the Grinch on the Festival of Angels night parade float. Committee Reports: . Bookstore - Price changes are being considered. It was suggested that magazines sell for 10% of list price. A meeting with the bookstore volunteers will be scheduled soon. Library Board Officer Appointments . The officers are as follows: Chairman, Ruth Tienor; Vice-Chairman, Pattie Lovelady; Secretary, Mary McAllister; Treasurer, Laura Wilson; Margaret Riley, AALS Lay Representative Library 30th Anniversary Events/Committee . Margaret, Neota, and Carol were appointed to the committee. Some events to be discussed are groundbreaking, National Library Week in April, 30th Anniversary in June, Love my Library Month in February and 4th of July float (birthday cake with 30 candles), and Children's Library Week in May. Discussion on Name for Library Bookstore in New Building . Give suggestions to Melissa as she is compiling a list of possible bookstore names. Items by Library Board members: . Badges for the volunteers were suggested. Mary made the motion to adjourn. Neota seconded. Motion carried.
