"'-" Schertz Historical Preservation Committee
Meeting of May 15, 2008
I. Meeting caned to order by Committee Chairman Dean Weirtz at 6:30 p.m.
II. Announcements included:
A. Tom Dekender's possible return to the Committee
B. Welcome visitors Cecilia Paz-Mujica, Merle Ruth Behne,
Katherm Moos. David Scagliola, and Robert Buchanan
C. Sister-City (Riedisheim, France) update status
D Comal County Genealogical Society Projects (Workshop
Saturday, June 14, 2008/Field Trip June 10,2008
III. Introduction of Guest Speaker - Jean Heide, San Antonio resident and legal
secretary. Mrs. Heide is the unofficial Selma historian, President of the Selma
Historical Assoc., Pres. San Antonio Founders Day Alliance, and Director
German Texas Heritage Society. Mrs Heide spoke on the history of Selma
and activities of the Selma Historical Assoc.
IV. Minutes of previous meeting held 4/17/08 approved as written
~ v. Pending Business
Subcommittee Reportjng:
A Kramer House Proiect - Use is as a visitors center and the Committee
has been designated to use two rooms to place historical displays. Benefits
include public exposure to Schertz historical information and funding of
facility through motellhotel tax revenue.
B. City Historical Plaque DeveloDment - Plaque wording offered for
acceptance by the Committee. Motion to accept existing wording, with an
amended spelling of the word "Schertz" to "Schertz'" (adding an
apostrophe) was passed. Date and place for dedication will be arranged by
Mayor Baldwin with the Randolph Reality Building owners.
C. Cemetery - Discussion of scope of the project resulted in the
Committee agreeing to allow the subcommittee to evaluate and report
back to the full committee.
D. Archives - Ray reported that Annita Clark is gathering historical
photos for publication of a Police Association calendar. Discussion of the
need for use of professional lighting, copying, handling, etc. techniques
--
when dealing with photographs and papers that may eventually go into the
Archive files. The discussion included sources of financing for use of
professional assistance and City Council member David Scagliola
reported the existence of a fund that may be used for Committee expenses.
He will advise the Mayor of the Committees interest in knowing how to
go about requesting funds for professional services.
E. Historian - Lula Mae Schertz presented a 10"x 16" copy of an
overview photo of the City of Schertz (circa 1934) with an accompanying
listing of landmarks (homeslbuildings/etc) that correspond to numbered
locations depicted on the photo. The item is for eventual placement in the
museum.
F. Outreach - Proposals covered under Regular Agenda.
VI. Regular Agenda
A. Historical Plaque inscription reviewed and correction to spelling to add an
apostrophe on the end of the word "Schertz".
B. Outreach Subcommittee proposals:
1. Web link redesign submitted to Brad Bailey
2. Founders Day Celebration Proposal- Committee believes the
'---" ideal has merit however suggests that it be postponed until
2009 ~d a ~date for such be coordinated with other city
sponsored events so as not to conflict.
3. Engage members in community speaking when possible
4. Use of brochures (permanent/special event) - David Scagliola
will brief the Mayor and attempt to see if city staff can assist
with the development of brochures.
5. Featured exhibit program - Committee favors use of such a
program once museum is up and running.
C. Statue of Liberty Article - To be published in next month's Schertz Tales.
D. Grant (Community Development Partnership Program) proposal sent to
Austin and announcement to be made as to approval/diaapproval in June 2008.
Amount requested was $4,900.00
E. Archives and Museum Gathering - Items were discovered at Pat Ramirez'
building and additional items have been obtained (posters) from the Post Office.
The furniture store request still remains pending answer from owners.
