SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES

The LAB met on December 3, 2007 with the following members present:

Guests: Bob Brockman Robert Wilkins
Minutes: Margaret moved to accept the minutes, and John seconded. Motion carried.
Treasurer's Report: Mary moved to approve the report, and Neota seconded. Motion carried.
Bookstore earnings for November were $1025.30. This is the fIrst time monthly sales have
exceeded $1000.
Citizen Comments: Mr. Brockman voiced concerns on the time of bid opening, architects'
directions given on library plans, and on/off timing of parking lot lights.
Librarians' Reports:
. Stats were as follows:
circulation - 21.227 patrons - 12,610 computer usage - 1981 info questions - 830
story time - 407 cards - 197 (new) 351 (renewal) estimated calls received -743
November circulation and patron stats are down this year compared to November 2006.
. Proposals for the library building project are due December 10th at 2 pm and they will be
opened at 4 pm. If all goes as scheduled, recommendations will be brought to city
council on December 18th and start date will be January 2008. Construction time is
estimated to be 12-14 months.
. Furniture estimates for the the new building are $400,000 which includes shelving,
chairs, and tables.
. A full-time staff position is open as a staff member has resigned.
. AALS Geographic meeting was held on November 9th. Ruth and Melissa attended.
. A workshop entitled "How to Stay Out of Jail- Training for Friends and Boards" was
held on November 16th at the SA Public Library. Setting up a 501 3(c) was addressed.
Margaret, Ruth, Melissa, and Mary attended.
. Nicki shared the photos from the "Get Caught Reading" contest. All photos were taken
be adults. A winner was selected.
. Nicki has submitted a grant for an outreach program. The proposed project is called
Bookapalooza. Books, videos, etc. would be put in rolling suitcases which would be
available for check out by daycares and home schools.
. "Be a Shining Star" is the tree in the library. Persons can make a donation to the library
by selecting a star from the tree. Star values are $5 up to $1000.
. The library is listed on Igive.com
. Four clocks and 1 wall plaque are listed on e-bay.
Community Services Director's Report: none
Council Liaison's Report:
. Bid approval will be next week
. Michael is looking forward to portraying the Grinch on the library float in the city's
Festival of Angels Night Parade.
Committee Reports: none
Robert Wilkens Presentation on a Mural for New Library Building
. Robert Wilkens, local muralist, would like to paint a mural for the new building. He
would paint on canvas and then it would be adhered to the wall. The LAB was interested
in the project but has concerns about fInancing, etc. Further information is need to make
a decision.

Bookmark Contest: e
. Seventy-one entries were received for the bookmark contest. A winner was selected and
copies of the winning bookmark will be available at the library.
Discussion on Setting Price for Handmade Book Shelves
. It was decided that prices will be as follows: single shelf, $15; double shelf, $25, and
large shelf, $35.
Items by Library Board members:
. Council will reappoint board members at the city council meeting on Tuesday, December
4th at 6:30 pm.
. A cash register will be placed in the bookstore soon.
. The city's Festival of Angels Night parade is scheduled for 6:30 pm on Friday.
Mary made the motion to adjourn. Laura seconded. Motion carried.
The next LAB meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 07, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.
