SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES
The LAB met on February 6, 2006 with the following members present:

Minutes: Minutes for the January meeting were presented. Patti made the motion to
accept the minutes. Margaret seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Treasurer's Report: Barbara presented the report. Simone asked if an amount should
be moved into the investment account. Melissa and Nikki stated that there would be
upcoming expenses. It was decided to leave the money as is for the present. Margaret
moved to accept the report. Mary seconded. Motion carried.

Librarians' Reports:
. The stats for January were as follows: 21,210 in circulation; and 14, 268;atrons.
Computer software was down the first 2 weeks of January and on the 23r data
was corrupted.
. The Winter Reading Program has been very successful. There are 100 children
participating as of the end of January. ~is interested in hearing more about
the program. ~ "71 fl 1-.5
. Melissa attended the~dwinter conference. She attended workshops,
spoke with vendors, and gathered information on the following:
1. Integrated systems software. Approximate cost $60,000 - $100,000
2. Radio Frequency Identification Tags (Rfff) Currently we are using
magnetic tape strips. 'R r 'D
3. Software for print programs/management systems.
4. Wireless hot spot workshop
. The spring membership meeting will be March 17 in Utopia. Illustrator Joy
Fisher ~will be there.
. Nicki has begun work on the summer reading program. The theme is "Reading:
Sport of Champions". Her goal is to have 1,100 children involved in the program.
So far presentations include a teenage magician, Mad Science with dry ice, Game
Convention with assistance from the Boy Scouts, Bike Rodeo directed by police
Officer Kruetler, and Dinosaur George. The Dinosaur George representative
wanted to know if the library was interested in sell DVDs. After discussion,
consensus was that the library would not be involved in the sales but that he could
sell them after his presentation.

. Summer Movies at the Playscape has been a successful program in the past.
Melissa would like to show 3 movies this summer. Cost would be approximately
$1,600.
. Nicki is considering a working on a program called Teens and Technology. This
would be for those 12-16 or possibly 18 years. It could include gaming on line,
IPODs, audio books, blogs, and e-books on line.
. Nicki would like the library to become an official voting station for the Blue
Bonnet Awards. Five books must be read before the vote can be cast. Voting
would be in January.
. Charlotte Rawley, library volunteer and part-time employee, passed away on
January 24th. Melissa spoke with her daughter, Ellen, concerning memorial
donations. Ellen asked that donations be made to the library or Schertz United
Methodist Church. Some money has been received.
Committee Reports: none
Old Business: Simone moved that we accept the Unattended Children's Policy. Patti
seconded. Motion passed.
New Business:

. Gail will check with the city attorney to see if the LAB can become a 50 1 (c)3
Foundation.
. The LAB members should be thinking of ideas for fund raising for a capital
campaign. New computers and software are some of the needs.
. Nicki is requesting $1,500 for the summer reading program and $30 for the Blue
Bonnet Voting Station. Simone made a motion to provide $3,130 to fund the
summer reading program, movies at the playscape, and the Blue Bonnet Voting
Station. Margaret seconded. Motion carried.
. Memorial for Charlotte Rawley will be discussed at the next meeting, possibly
something for the children's area.
. Leah has resigned.
. Carl Douglas, city council representative, reported that the Strategic Planning
Meetings have been completed. Wednesday evening is the final meeting to
discuss the bond issue. February 22 is the last day to file for the bond to be put on
the May ballot. Bond total would probably be in the $40 millions range.
Simone made the motion to adjourn. Barbara seconded. Motion carried.
The next LAB meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 06,2006 at 7:00 p.m.

The March 6,2006 LAB meeting was postponed until Monday, March 13th at 7 p.m. so
the agenda would reach City Hall in required time.
