LAB 03-13-2006 e SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES The LAB met on.h 13 with the following members present: Ruth Tienor Margaret Riley Simone Bailey Patti Lovelady Barbara Ricks Mary McAllister Melissa Uhlhorn Gail Douglas Carl Douglas Guest: Laura Wilson Minutes: Minutes for the January meeting were presented. Under the Librarians' Reports corrections are as follows: change ALS to AALS, ALAS to ALA, RFIT to RFID, and Hine to Hein. Margaret moved to accept the minutes as corrected. Simone seconded. Motion carried. Treasurer's Report: Barbara presented the report. Simone moved to accept the report. Mary seconded. Motion carried. Citizen Comments: none e Librarians' Reports: . The stats for February were as follows: 19,636 in circulation. This was slightly lower than last year, but overall circulation is 8.9% higher for this year. . The Winter Reading Program had 109 participants. Reading minutes logged were 48,880. The Program ended with the Clue game and the library served as the board. Twelve children participated. The Law Enforcement Club at the high school assisted. . AALS Spring Membership Meeting is March 17 in Utopia. . TLA Conference is April 25-28. . Approximately $200 has been given in memorial for Charlotte Rawley. . Rick Cavender from Saturn of SA participated in the Read Across America program. . Work has begun on the Summer Reading Program. Committee Reports: none Old Business: . LAB applications were reviewed. Mary moved to submit John Correu and Laura Wilson for appointment to the LAB. Barbara seconded. Motion carried. Gail will submit the names for approval by City Council. . No information has been received about a 501 (c)3 Foundation. New Business: . Members received an e-mail from Lisa. Simone moved that we accept Lisa's e-mail as a letter of resignation. Patty seconded. Motion carried. . Possible future fund raising/library events ideas included the following: author presentations, story telling quilt, memorial bricks, buy a book campaign, approach businesses in the industrial park for donations, walk-a-thon, golftournament, story telling event (gala) on opening day, and have the buy a book campaign the same time as the summer mOVIes. e Simone made the motion to adjourn. Patti moved to accept the minutes and Margaret seconded. Motion carried. Treasurer's Report: February treasurer's report was presented. Barbara reported that in March bookstore sales were $571.78. Also she will keep a total of memorial money given for specific persons. Mary moved to accept the report. Margaret seconded. Motion carried. Citizen Comments: none e Librarians' Reports: . The stats for March were as follows: 23,005 in circulation. This was 9% higher than March of2005. . Nicki is working on the summer reading program. The theme is "Reading, the Sport of Champions". Examples of items she has received are Texas Ranger signed pennants, basketball warm-ups from Rice University and Schlitterbahn tickets. . The Lap Sit program is doing well. It will be suspended over the summer. . The Teens and Tweens program attendance is down. . Robert Wilkens has donated $100 for audio books. . Staff has been working on data corrections/info on the patron cards. . There was a leak in the roof over the open space in the middle of the library. There has been no response from the roofing company at this time. . Margaret and Melissa attended the Spring Membership meeting. The author spoke on the process of creating a picture book. This was an interesting presentation. Margaret shared information from the Networking Etiquette session she attended. A calendar titled "Studs and Buds" was shared as a unique fund raiser. Committee Reports: none e Old Business: . Bond Committee will be meeting on Thursday, April 6th. . Margaret wrote a letter to Debbie Gildea asking why the library was not mentioned in the Progress 2005 portion of the Herald. Gail said that the deadline was missed. New Business: . April is volunteer recognition month. There are 19 volunteers at the library. Cookies or donuts will be put out for them. A suggestion was made that possibly the LAB host a luncheon for the volunteers at a later date. . 4th of July float will be discussed next month. . Copies of policy updates (Dress and Appearance, ILL, Patron Conduct, Personnel, Unattended Children, Wireless Internet Access, and Vision Mission Statement) were available so that members could update their policy manuals.
