LAB 05-02-2005 . . . '. SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES The LAB met on May 2, 2005 with the following members present: Ruth Tienor Mary McAllister Margaret Riley Carl Douglas Julie Parr Leah Tamez Melissa Uhlhorn Barbara Ricks Simone Bailey Gail Douglas Visitor: Robert Brockman Minutes: Minutes for the April meeting were presented. Julie made the motion to accept the minutes. Leah seconded. The motion carried. Treasurer's Report: The March report was presented. Mary made the motion to accept the report. Margaret seconded. The motion carried. Librarians' Report: . The April circulation number was 20,247, which is a 12% increase. . The total number of patrons in April was 15,300, with 347 attending story time. The computer usage total was 1,941. . Plans for the summer reading program are on schedule and going well. The impressive list of donations continues to grow. . The Tweens program continues to have low attendance but will continue. . There will be a Monopoly tournament during the summer. Hasbro will donate the games. . The T.Y program, Cat Paws, will film a segment at the playscape on July 6. . Movies are scheduled on the third Saturday of each month during the summer. The schedule is as follows: June 18- The lncredibles; July 16- Racing Stripes; August 20- Sponge Bob . Word of Life Church will donate ice cream. The library will sell drinks. . The staff is required to attend 10 hours of continuing education each year. Various workshops will be held in May. . The Eagle Scout project has been completed. . The parking lot lights have been completed. The gazebo has been built, but needs to be sealed. A trash can and planters will be added soon. . Melissa had to contact the court about a customer not returning $70 worth of materials. . Nicki plans to have a calendar of events available to the public each month. . Gail asked the LAB for its opinion on a location for a new library. It was agreed that land on either side of the present library would be good in order to keep services in the same area of the city. She will contact city officials about the possibility of purchasing the land. . Melissa reported that grant money is available and that paperwork needs to be filed by Oct. 1. Rep. Henry Cuellar is very interested and perceptive to helping the city acquire a new library. . A rendering of a new library by an architect would be beneficial when a bond is presented to the public. The cost would be approximately $5,000. . . . JL , . Julie made the motion for the LAB to approve an amount not to exceed $5,000, with the possibility of the city donating $2,500, for a rendering and program by the architect for the new library. Mary seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous to approve the motion. Committee Reports: None Old Business: . July 4th float plans need to be finalized. . Melissa plans to order library bags to sell to the public for about $12.00. The cost per bag is $6.47. The new city logo will be added. New Business: Melissa plans to put an item in the city newsletter asking interested citizens to attend a training session for shelving books because more volunteers are needed. She will also include the need for more book store volunteers. Citizens to be heard: Mr. Brockman stated that he thinks the city should have an answer about what land is available for the new library before a grant is submitted. He also stated that two computers have been out of service for some time and gives a negative impression of the library. Melissa confirmed that the computers have had problems and my need to be replaced. Mr. Brockman also asked that the marquee be kept up to date. Julie made the motion to adjourn. Margaret seconded.
