SCHERTZ PUBLIC LffiRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES
The LAB met on August 2, 2004 with the following members present:

Minutes: Minutes for the June 2004 meeting were presented. Ruth moved to accept the
minutes as corrected. Margaret seconded. The motion carried.
Treasurer's Report: Julie presented the May and June reports. Margaret moved to
accept the reports. Lisa seconded. The motion carried.

Librarians' Report:
· Melissa reported the June circulation was the highest to date with 28,033 check
outs. July's stats were 24,509. There is a 23% increase year to date from last
year with 196,396 check outs.
· The float entry in the July 4th Parade won a 2nd place trophy in the municipal
category.
· A lay position with the Alamo Area Library System (AALS) needs to be filled.
The application needs to be filled out by Aug. 6. Margaret will be the lay person
and an alternate is also needed. Gail will talk to someone at city hall about
putting the need in the newsletter.
· Melissa stated that bookstore volunteers are needed. She and Gail asked the LAB
to consider the idea of closing the bookstore to allow for more library space.
Any ideas on what to do with the books and whether or not to have book sales at
various times during the year will be discussed further at the next meeting. Gail
will also look into the availability of using vacant city owned houses near the fire
station as storage.
· Melissa and Gail announced that Holly Smith is resigning and has accepted a
position in Cedar Park as Children's Librarian. They applauded her work at
Schertz Library and wish her much success. Her last day will be Aug. 4. The job
opening has been posted on the TLAjob board as well as in the Herald. The job
posting closes on August 20.
· Holly reported that the Summer Reading Program was a big success with 813
children signed up and was well attended. The children logged 372,800 minutes
of reading. She also thanked the various businesses who donated gift certificates.
· The last summer movie will be on Saturday, August 21. Spy Kids 3-D will be
shown.
Committee Reports:
New Business: Gail asked for volunteers to help with the City in the Park festivities to
be held on Sept. 18 to benefit the ALS Foundation.
Ruth made the motion to adjourn the meeting. Julie seconded. The motion carried.
. The next LAB meeting will be on Monday September 13 at 7:00 p.m.
