SCHERTZ PUBLIC LmRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES

The LAB met on May 7, 2001 with the following members present:

Minutes: Minutes were presented. Ruth moved to approve the minutes and Margaret
seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Treasurer's Report: Gail presented the treasurer's report submitted by Julie.
Librarian's Report:
· Gail presented a "Library Customer Conduct Policy" from the San Antonio Public
Library. Currently the Schertz Library does not have such a policy, but Gail would like to
have one adopted. The LAB agreed.
· The Public Library Advisory Board Handbook from the Texas State Library and Archives
Commission was distributed to all member of the LAB.
· Norma and Gail attended a workshop on future trends.
· Stats were even from the previous month.
· Videos can now be checked out for 1 week. A limit of 10 videos can be checked out at
one time. Also they can be reserved.
· Gail and Sandy have received additional training from the Gates people. It has been
excellent.
· There are 10 Internet terminals. Two Internet terminals in the genealogy room are for
research only. There are also 6 word processors.
· The summer reading program begins June 6th with 2 one hour sessions--one at 10:30 and
one at 2:00. The morning session is designed for Kindergarten through 2nd grade and the
afternoon session for 3rd through 6th. It will be a 6 week reading program with
Wednesday sessions. The theme is "To the Library and Beyond". Each child who reads
50 easy books or 25 junior books will receive a book bag.
New Business:
· Ruth moved to adopt the presented Library Customer Conduct Policy as Gail has
amended and that Gail make any further changes as needed. Simone seconded. Motion
passed.
Old Business:
· Jennifer had questions from various community members concerning library focus,
Schertz Library and the high school library, and reference materials.
-- The focus of the library was chosen by the LAB. The focus is "Reading and the
Young Child".
-- The Schertz Library is here to support the high school library not to replace it.
-- Request for reference material can be submitted to Gail.
Report from Council Representative:
· Election report - Tim Swinney has been elected and Regina Agee has been re-elected to
the city council.
· On May 14th from 6:30-9:30 a Community Forum to gather input to plan for the future of
Schertz will be held.
· A grant for walking and bike trails connecting neighborhoods throughout Schertz has
been submitted.

Ruth moved to adjourn and Simone seconded. The next meeting will be on Monday, June 4,
at 7:00 p.m.
