SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES
The LAB met on January 3,2000 with the following members present:
Margaret Riley Pattie Lovelady Julie Parr Mary McAllister
Norma Head Barbara Ricks Pia Jarman Gail Douglas
Ruth Tienor
Juan Thorn
Minutes: The minutes for the December 1999 meeting were presented. Ruth made the
motion to accept the minutes. Mary seconded the motion. The motion carried.
Treasurer's Report: No report was available due to a problem with the new system that
has been installed at city hall. For some reason, the program keeps omitting reports for
October 1999. The senior accountant for the city, Juan Sontoya, is trying to solve the
problem. Julie stated that through the end of November, the investment account should
be $18,905.00 and the cash account should be $3,003.60. Bookstore deposits for
December totaled $195.10. Hopefully there will be an official report by the end of
January.
Librarian's Report:
-Sandy has returned to work full-time after having a successful surgery and recovery.
-Tony Vander Heyden discovered that the server software is not compliant. He will work
on installing new software as soon as it is received. He came in on January 1 and
found that the date on all the computers was 1980, however, when he checked again on
January 3 everything was okay.
-There were many positive remarks about the "Visions of Santa" exhibit during
December. The paintings are still on display until Billy Keen returns from vacation.
-Gail will apply for a $100,000.00 TIF grant with a 10% match by January 14. The grant
money will be used to buy more computers to double public access as well as to
purchase a projector and laptop computer to do training. There is a need for more
computers because more people are coming in to use them.
-There have been staffing problems due to illnesses, but hopefully things will soon get
back to normal.
-The stats for December were down about 400, but the library was closed more.
January 3,200lANas a very busy day with over 400 patrons entering the library.
-The bookstore is continuing to do well both in sales and with volunteers. There is a
volunteer staffing problem 0n Mondays, but that should soon be remedied.
Committee Reports:
Margaret reported changes in committee assignments as follows:
Policy Committee: Ruth and Mary
Publicity: Pattie

hung or should a new one be purchased? Margaret suggested that both the old and a
new plaque be displayed.

Schertz on January 4,2000 at 7:00 p.m. at city hall. A reception will precede the
meeting at 6:30.
Council Representative, Pia Jarman reported that the F.M.78 project should be
completed in two years.
