SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES
The LAB met on May 1, 2000 with the following members present:
Margaret Riley Julie Parr Mary McAllister Pia Jarman Gail Douglas
Norma Head Ruth Tienor Barbara Ricks Henry Guiterrez
Minutes: The minutes for the April meeting were presented. Ruth made the motion to
accept the minutes. Julie seconded the motion. The motion carried.
Treasurer's Report: No written report was available because of questions about the
correct amount in the account. $10,000 has been added to the account, but Julie does
not know why. Julie is trying to solve the problem by going over her records with the
auditor. She did report that the cash account has at least $4,532.04 and the investment
account should be $19,268.51.
.
Librarian's Report:
-Gail met with the comptroller. He stated that the library has $35,000, even though Gail
does not agree with the amount. She is trying to solve the problem as is Julie.
-Money from the $100,000 grantis being spent on computers.
-Gail is planning to apply for a grant from the Gates Foundation, which would allow for
four additional computers. This foundation is trying to give computers to aU libraries in
Texas that apply for their grant. They also provide training for library employees. Gail
is unsure of the cash value of the grant but does know that the money has to be used
on Gateway computers. Our existing computers could be linked to the network.
-There are still leaks in the roof whenever it rains, but this is expected until a new roof
can be put on. Gail is under the impression that the city will take care of the expense in
October. .
-Gail reported that the fire department has moved into its new facility, and that the other
offices are slowly being moved. There will be a grand opening once the moves have
been completed.
-There have been several donations of books to the bookstore which has required a lot
of work to go through. Books in good condition have been added to the bookstore while
others have been recycled.
-The 4th of July Parade theme is "Remembering the Century."
New Business: Suggestions for the July 4th parade were made. Books from each
decade could be displayed. Members could be dressed in costume from each decade.
The ideas will be discussed further at the next LAB meeting.
Council Representative: Pia reported that she will attend her last council meeting on
May 16. Norma will be sworn in during that council meeting. She also thanked the
board for their requestto have her join the LAB to fill Norma's vacancy. This move will
require council approval.
.
The motion to adjourn was made by Mary and seconded by Julie. The next LAB
meeting will be on Monday, June 5,2000 at 7:00 p.m.
