Librarian's Report:
-$1,000 was received from H.E.B. for the library book promotion held at the beginning of
the year.
-Gail reported that the circulation statistics are up from last year with 52,895 circulated
items in 1998 compared to 54,877 in 1999. Also, the Internet has had 498 users during
the month. There have been 2,093 users since the internet was instaiied, with an
average of 28 users per day.
-Gail is not sure when bids for remodeling are due, but there have been 5-6 contractors
in to take measurements for carpet, brick, etc. Hopefully remodeling will begin in a
couple of months.
-Gail attended a planning workshop in Leakey at the beginning of March. She and the
other librarians in attendance discussed how libraries could serve communities in the
future.
-Gail and Norma attended a meeting in Kenedy where Sue and Tony VanderHeyden
received an award for helping small town libraries with grant information.
-Gai! will attend the TLA. Convention from Apri! 20-23 in Dallas. She wi!! also attend an
electronic data base workshop on the Tuesday before the TLA Convention to get
information on ProQuest, a periodical database that includes 325 titles. The service
would cost $1200 a year. There is money in the budget and Gail plans to get the
service, which would allow library patrons with cards to access the service from home.
-Patrons can access the card catalog from home on-line by going to the library web
page.
Committee Reports: The Policy Committee made sure each member in attendance
received revised copies of the 1999 Policy.
Old Business: Norma recommended Jake Valadez to fill the empty board position. The
LAB agreed to the recommendation, which will need council approval.
Council liaison, Pia Jarman, reported that the city now has a tree ordinance to protect
certain trees from being cut down by developers.
.
..
New Business: Fourth of July Parade plans need to be made. A suggestion was made
to decorate the float using our own ideas instead of following the city's theme.
The motion to adjourn was made by Julie and seconded by Pattie. The next LAB
meeting will be on May 3, 1999 at 7:00 p.m.
