SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES
The LAB met on December 6, 1999 with the following members present:
Margaret Riley Ruth Tienor Julie Parr Mary McAllister
Norma Head Barbara Ricks Pia Jarman Gail Douglas
Minutes: The minutes for the October meeting were presented. Mary made the motion
to accept the minutes. Julie seconded the motion. The motion carried. No minutes
were presented for the month of November due to the lack of a quorum at the
November meeting.
.
Treasurer's Report: Reports for September and October were presented, however no
printed report was available for November due to a discrepancy on the print out. The
print out did not show interest on the balance of the investment account for September,
just October. Julie is checking with the city to find the problem. Julie noted that the
bookstore is continuing to do well with deposits of $268.41 in September, $272.43 in
October, and $244.42 in November. Also, the new book drop was paid for in
November. Ruth made the motion to accept the reports given. Norma seconded the
motion. The motion carried.
Librarian's Report:
-The stats for November were down about 300 due to the library being closed for
several days.
-Gail is concerned about staffing for December because Sandy will be out due to
surgery, and Vera had already scheduled vacation time for Christmas week. The week
of Christmas Gail will have to open and close the library. It will be a short week,
however, because the library will be closed Friday and Saturday.
-Tony VanderHeyden will be in on January 2 to make sure all the computers are running
okay.
-Handicap parking will be reinstalled after the parking lot is repaved.
-Gail suggested that Pattie Lovelady be honored in January for her service on the L.AB.
Committee Reports:
-Nominating Committee: The same slate of officers will be presented to the council for
the year 2000; Margaret Riley-chairperson; Juan Thorn- vice chairperson; Julie Parr-
treasurer; Barbara Ricks-secretary.
-Henry Gutierrez has agreed to fill the L.AB. position vacated by Jake Valadez.
-Mary made the motion to ask Pattie Lovelady to reconsider joining the board. Ruth
seconded the motion. The motion carried. In the event that Pattie declines, the board
will present Simone Bailey's name as her replacement.
-Ruth made the motion to accept the slate of officers. Mary seconded the motion. The
motion carried.
Old Business: None
New Business: On Saturday, December 11, 1999, an exhibit by Billy Keen entitled
. "Visions of Santa" will be on display. The exhibit will continue until December 23. An

available during that time. The open house will also tie in with celebrating the new look
of the library.
Council Representative, Pia Jarman reported that the F.M.78 project is back on track
since Universal City purchased the parcel of land along the railroad. The project should
resume in January. Also in January, the new city facilities should be completed and
ready for move-in.
Pia reported that Ruth Tienor was selected as the Paragon Hometown Hero for Schertz
on November 17,1999. The city will honor Ruth at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January
4,2000 in the conference room at city hall.
The motion to adjourn was made by Ruth and seconded by Julie. The next LAB
meeting will be on Monday, January 3, 2000 at 7:00 p.m.
