Questions and Answers
new library instead of ad-
ding on to the present
Over the past couple of '. structure?
months several questions
concerning the Schertz
Public Library and its ex-
pansion plans have been
brought to my attention.
Hopefully a "question and
answer" article will provide
answers to some of these
questions and keep the
public better infonned of
our library operation.
Does Schertz really need
a new library building?
Yes! Since its opening in
June 1978 the Schertz
Public Library has shown
phenomenal growth; over
3,500 people hold library
cards with 50 new cards be-
ing issued monthly. In 1981
circulation increased 25 %
over the previous year with
25,000 Items being cir-
culated. A recent study con-
ducted during operating
hours showed that over 250
people a week use our facili-
ty; this does not include the
many people who receIve
infonnation over the phone
and view library films
shown outside the library.

State requirements man-
date that our collection of
materials must increase as
our population grows. A
collection of 5,OOO)ooks in
June 1978 has grown to over
12,000 books, paperbacks,
records, magazines and
film-strip cassettes; unfor-
tunately our space has not
grown. Those of you who
have been in the library are
aware of the crowded condi-
tions. Although our building
has close to 1,500 square
feet of space, only 960
square feet is available to
house our children, young
adult and reference collec-
----
tions, magazines,
audiovisual materials. and
equipment, study tables and
circulation area. The office-
workroom and restrooms
comprise the remaining
space.
Why has the library
board decided to build a
Originally the board had
decided to add a 500 square
foot room addition between
the present building and the
railroad tracks, for a total of
2,000 square feet. Bill
Gooch, the assistant state
librarian who is a consultant
on the construction of
library buildings, came to
Schertz in September 1980
and studied our
community's library needs.
In his written report, the
construction of at least a
5,800 square foot building
was recommended for our
present population; the 500
square foot room addition
would be totally inadequate.
The prospect of building a
second story on our present
building was considered and
rejected because laws on ac-
cessibility to the handicap-
ped would require an
elevator to be installed and
additional staff would be
needed to monitor the se-
cond level at unacceptable
expense. Plus, by going up
another story we would only
gamer a total of 3,000
square feet.
Studies conducted by the
city show that the popula-
tion of Schertz will be over
11,000 by 1984 and over
20,000 by 1990, so it is im-
perative that at least a 6,000
square foot building be
erected to keep up with the
increasing population.
Because of cheaper con-
struction costs and low
upkeep it was decided to
build a 6,000 square foot
steel building instead of a
more expensive masonry
structure .
How will funds be pro-
cured for the new
building?
The board currently has
around $30,000 In the
building fund for a new
library building; $3,000 of
County Revenue Shar
funds, which will be reet
ed during the summer,
also been eannarked for
building. This money
been placed in a C. D. ,
that interest is being accn
on this amount. $16,000
this money has come fr
Federal Revenue Shar
Funds allocated
Guadalupe County dur
the past three years
$3,450 has come from
regular Guadalupe Cou
budget. Proceeds from
past two book sales, FOl
of July Jubilee booths, ,
user's card fees, plus' do
tions and a foundation gr
make up the remainder
the fund.
Since the library does
have an auxiliary group
help raIse money,
twelve member board I
tackled the fundraisi
burden. Advisory bo,
members along w;
volunteers have Spt
endless hours prepari
fund request presentatio
~rant proposals a
conducting fund raising p
jects.
It has been estimated tl
$125,000 will be necess;
if we were to build a Oi
6,000 square foot build!
ready for immediate (
cupancy. Since this figure
so unmanageable at the p'
sent time, the board /;
decided to erect a 6,0
square foot slab and
sulated metal shell
around $48,000 and co
plete the building throu
self-help, community fur
raising projects, donatio
and future grants.
The board would like
organize a "Friends of t
Library" group to help w
our current building projt
and future endeavors. If y
are interested in joini;
such a group to help us bui
your new library, please C1
the library at 658-6011.

SUBJECT: Report for the 1982 Book Sale
The fourth annual book sale sponsored by the Schertz Public
Library Advisory Board was held the 26, 27, and 28 of March 1982
in the Schertz Community Cpnter. Set-up for the sale was the
24 th and a pre-sale for the Board members and Library volunteer
staff was held the night of the 25th. The books were returned to
storage and the Community center was cleaned up by volunteers the
afternoon of the 28th following the close of the sale.
The book sale was very successful. The hour count that is
conducted each hour of the sale showed that 394 people attended
the sale as a minimum. The net profit from the sale was
$1184.95 which has been deposited in the Library's account for
entry into the building fund.~ A thank you letter has been sent to
H. P. Printing of Schertz for their free printing of flyers.
My own th~~ks go to all of those people whose hard work, ded-
ication, and generous gift of time made this year's sale a success.
Respectfully submitted,
