The regular Advisory Board meeting was called to order by the
Chairman, Margare~ Riley. The minutes of the January meeting were approved
and the attached treasurer's report was accepted.
LIBRARIAN'S REPORT -- During January, 47 resident and 22 non-resident
cards werelssued. One user's fee and $38.05 in fines were collected.
The story hours were attended by 60 children. Total circulation was 1,682,
and 260 records and 11,454 books are on the shelves. An order has been
placed with Ingram Book Company for 60 adult books, and all the magazine
subscriptions have been placed.
Efforts are being made to record the history of the area. City
Manager, Jimmy Gilmore, is showing his interest by writing a history of
Schertz. Mrs. Bobbie Koch is planning to loan some old photographs to
the library. Volunteers will be solicitated to take part in the making
of oral history tapes.
Two meetings were held in District 10 during January. One at the
Canyon Lake Library v:as held to discuss priority: of' services given by
the District and a workshop in San Antonio explained the services avail-
able to the handicapped from the state Library.
BUDGET AND FINANCE COIv1MIT'l'EE -- Earl Sawyer stated that report had not
bee-n-l~ece-lved on the .legal i ty of using the Cornmuni ty Center for a Library.
Doug Mikus, Committee Chairman, asked for a consensus from the Board on
the use of the Community Center. Discussion was held on the pros and
cons of using the Center, but no consensus was reached.
BUILDING AND PROPERTY COMMITTEE -- Chairman, Henry Delony, said he had
contacted two other contractors, one about a concrete building and one
in Seguin about a metallic building. He showed drawings he had made of
possible floor plans pointing out the possibility for expansion and other
features. It was suggested that board members bring floor plans and
outside sketches to the next meeting.
Jim Delony, a civil engineer. expLained that building insulation
should be adequate, including thermopaned windows; and the proper nlli~ber of
exits should be included. He felt a metal building could be~ressed-up"
to be very attractive for very little money. Metal buildings are very
simple to construct because companies that build them do so over and over.
It was agreed to hold off on building publicity until an answer is
received from the city on the use of the Community Center.
POLICY COMMITTEE -- Chairman. Ruth Tienor, read the by-law corrections
and changes recommended by the POlicy Committee. A motion to accept the
by-law corrections and changes was made by Elaine Schlather, seconded by
Jackie Cleveland, and received an unanimous vote.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS -- The annual book sale will be held March 27-29.
It was agreed to sell new children's books. Linn Landis will contact a
company that furnishes the books and gives the Library a percentage of
the sales made.
In order to involve the entire Board in the fund raising efforts for
a new library, the Budget and Finance Committee will organize several
sub-committees.
