LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES
The Library Advisory Board met in regular session on Monday, January 5,
1987, at 7:30 p.m. In the absence of the chairman, Vice-Chairman Earl
Hartzog presided.

Minutes from the December meeting were approved after the following cor-
rections were noted: 1) The amount stolen from the library was $112.14,
2) it was the "E" inventory only that was done in November, and 3) the
December 2 trip to Boerne by Gail and Margaret concerned a Hill Country
meeting on budget. Ruth moved to approve the amended minutes and Margaret
seconded.
TREASURER'S REPORT
Julie gave some information on current finances. No written report was
submitted. According to city records the balance at the end of November
was $2170.77. In November the CD was purchased for $i7,265 and earned
$80.36. There were no December balance figures because the city book-
keeper was unavailable. In December the CD was purchased for $17,345.
Shelving was paid for in December.
The Library received two tax rebate donations; each was $1.46. Joanne
Hardin gave a donation of $100.00 for books.

Gail received word that the storeroom at Seguin Savings will no longer
be available to us for storing books. We can keep it through the dance
date on Feb. 14, 1987.
Although there were no fines assessed in December because of amnesty
month, not very many books were returned.
Gail restated that fines are now 10~ a day; this increase began in Jan.
The two add-on sections for the picture book shelves have arrived.
There is need for help in assembling.

Gail is now enrolled in a Tuesday night class entitled "Collection
Development". She plans to evaluate our collection in conjunction
. with her course work.
PUBLICI RELAfTlIONS COMMITTEE
Connie reported on the.decals for merchants donating auction items.
Samples sent to her were displayed to board members. Cost is 50~-
85~ each.. A less-expensive decal is preferable, if available. No
action was taken.
BUILDING COMMITTEE
There was a pros and cons discussion of [.: bricking the building.
Using the capital improvements money for expanding the library build-
ing was also discussed. Gail said that there is enough room for books
presently; it is the workroom area that is crowded. Building a sepa-
rate storage building on library property was mentioned. The consen-
. . sus was that more information on expansion costs and needs would be
helpful.
OLD BUSINESS
The dance/auction plans were discussed. The Humane Society members are
collecting donations from area merchants. Liz Mueller will contact
Mr. Linnear, the auctioneer.
The event will take place at the Schertz Community Center on Feb. 14,'
1987, from 8:00 P.M. to 1:00 A.M. Cost is $3.00 per person.
Board members accepted various responsibilities for dance preparations.
Gail will check with Doris about donating the food and will call Rep.
Kuempel about a Texas. flag donation and his time as a guest auctioneer.
Bill Neller of the Humane Society will be contacted about the use of
the VFW liquor license. Margaret will check about a U.S. flag from
Mac Sweeney. Tony and Earl will see about kegs of beer. Earl also
will get ice. Connie will contact Pepsi for soft drinks and.will
arrange for the tickets, posters, and media publicity. Mary will work
on decorations. Ruth and Mary will help get food if necessary. We
will again use Tony's bar for serving. Gail and Margaret will check
about getting Visa/Mastercard.
Literacy Council: Margaret reported that the program is on-going. A
workshop to train tutors will be held in the library on Jan. 16, 6-9 p.m.;
Jan. 17, 9:30-3:30; Jan. 23, 6-9 p.m.; and Jan. 24, 9:30-3:30. Thirty-
five letters were sent to prospective tutors. 14 tutors have already
received some training and will continue instruction. There are fourteen
students now; more are needed.
NEW BUSINESS
The tentative date to load and move books from the storage area is Feb. 7.
We must investigate other storage facilities.
