LAB 05-05-2008SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES The LAB met on May 5, 2008 with the following members present: Pattie Lovelady Margaret Riley Laura Wilson Neota Brady Carol Cyr Mary McAllister Gail Douglas Nicki Stohr Guests: Bob Brockman Ray Mueller Minutes: Margaret moved to accept the minutes, and Carol seconded. Motion carried. Treasurer’s Report: Sidewalk Sale and April Bookstore sales were $834.72. Mary moved to accept the treasurer’s report, and Neota seconded. Motion carried. Citizen Comments: Mr. Brockman asked about the 4th of July parade. The library has a float and uses a city utility trailer. Librarians’ Reports: Stats were as follows: circulation – 25,120 library cards – 228 new & 329 renewals Circulation statistics are 13.8% higher than April 2007. Circulation statistics for fiscal year 2008 are 6.2% higher than the same time frame of FY 2007. Work on the new library building is on schedule. Crews are working on utility connections, foundation beams, and hollow-core planks. Polaris server software has been installed and data conversion is continuing. Library will be closed for software training and CPR/AED/First Aid training. Abitibi Recycling is offering a monetary incentive for increased recycling amounts during May-August. Two hundred fifty dollars will be given for a 20% increase and five hundred dollars for a 25% increase. Shelley Tollette has been hired as a programming aide. Nicki attended the Schertz Cibolo Optimist meeting and requested $200 for music. Free comic book day was this past Saturday. Summer Reading Club registration will be on-line later this month. Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey are donating circus tickets. Bozo Crunch, circus Goodwill Ambassador, will speak to the Summer Reading Club about clowning on June 10th. Book Fair will be held June 6-8. The library will get credits to purchase Scholastic computer software. A bike rodeo will be held on June 14th. Council Liaison’s Report: none Report on Contract with Bacon Lee Assoc. for Fundraising Campaign: Gail meets with them weekly. Currently they are working on fundraising strategies and gathering data. LCRA grant request has been sent in. Discussion on Cookbook Author/Dessert Fundraising Idea: Nicki has been in contact with the office of Rebecca Rather, cookbook author. Ms. Rather calls herself the Pastry Queen and has had several cookbooks published. Nicki has contacted the local high schools about cooking desserts from the cookbook for a dessert tasting event. Response from the schools was positive. More information is needed before plans can be made. Committee Reports: 30th Anniversary Committee May – Entries for a drawing will be accepted. The drawing will be held at the June LAB meeting. Bookstore Committee Thanks extended to Ray and all who helped with the Book Sale. Items by Library Board members: - Past LAB minutes and treasurer’s reports will be prepared for scanning as requested by the city. Carol made the motion to adjourn. Laura seconded. Motion carried.
