SCHERTZ PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD (LAB) MINUTES The LAB met on June 2, 2008 with the following members present: Ruth Tienor Margaret Riley Laura Wilson Simone Bailey Carol Cyr John Correu Mary McAllister Melissa Uhlhorn Gail Douglas Guests: Bob Brockman Ray Mueller Minutes: Carol moved to accept the minutes, and Laura seconded. Motion carried. Treasurer’s Report: May Bookstore sales were $518.26. Mary moved to accept the treasurer’s report, and Margaret seconded. Motion carried. Citizen Comments: Mr. Brockman commented that it is good that the lights in the library parking lot are working. Librarians’ Reports: Stats were as follows: circulation – 18,326 patrons – 11,483 story times – 473 phone calls – 764 info./ref./comp. questions – 690 library cards – 241 new volunteer hours – 150 restitution hours – 77.5 Circulation statistics are 22% lower than May 2007; however, circulation statistics for fiscal year 2008 are 2.4% higher than the same time frame of FY 2007. The library was closed for training (6 days) and Memorial Day holiday. Due to the closure, statistics and bookstore sales are down. The Polaris training was excellent. Overall, everything is going smoothly. Most patron feedback has been positive. Twelve staff members completed the CPR, AED, and First Aid training. Work on the new library building is progressing. On-line registration for summer reading club began May 23. This summer emphasis will be on popular book characters (e.g. Captain Underpants, Junie B. Jones). Schertz Elementary visited the library on May 30. Sidewalk chalk drawings were part of the activities. Gail is continuing to work on fundraising with Bacon Lee Associates. They are compiling a list of naming and honoring opportunities in the new library. City council approved the naming/honoring opportunities. The children’s area will be named to honor Eric and Carolyn White for their generous donation to the library. City Council will recognize the 30th anniversary of the library at the June 3rd meeting. The Schertz/Cibolo Optimist Club donated $200 for music. The Cookbook/Author event discussed at the last meeting will be reconsidered at a later time after the new building is completed. Book Fair will be held June 6-8. A 501©3 Foundation has been established for the library. Members are June Hughes, Gail Douglas, Margaret Riley, Ruth Tienor, and Mary McAllister. Council Liaison’s Report: none Discussion on Library Float Workday: Happy Birthday, Schertz Library will be the theme of the float. Workday will be June 27th. Scheduling of Laserfiche Training and Scanning: Two or three people will be needed. Committee Reports: 30th Anniversary Committee Prize winner names were drawn. Carol will call the winners. Prize certificates will be in the library and can be redeemed in the bookstore. Bookstore Committee Current magazine issues are now priced at 25 cents. Most other magazines are 10 cents. Items by Library Board members: Question was asked about Saturday morning hours. Due to staffing, the library opens at noon. Melissa said that additional hours and staffing of the new facility are being reevaluated. Mary made the motion to adjourn. Carol seconded. Motion carried. There will not be a LAB meeting in July.
