01-15-2009 Minutes Schertz Historical Preservation Committee Meeting of January 15,2009 I. Sophienburg Museum & Archives Genealogy Workshop - Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, 9 a.m. to 11 :00 a.m at Sophienburg Museum. B. Chairman Weirtz thanked all members for their support of Committee projects since the last meeting to include: (1) representation at the November City Council meeting, (2) book sales efforts at City Council meeting/Festival of AngelsNisions of Santa event (3) individual book sales efforts of all but in particular the Ackermanns and the Schertzs (4) book revision efforts by all but particularly Debbie and Mayor Baldwin (5) to Gail for working into the early morning hours to accomplish the publication of our minutes this month (6) for all your support of the Christmas dinner event (7) to Lou for developing the accounting and inventory spread sheet to allow us to monitor book sales and cash deposits (8) and, Tom's coordination work with the State Historical Commission for transferring the heritage plaque from the Library to the Kramer House and subcommittee work re: plaque restoration and Kramer House move preparations C. Chairman Weirtz reviewed his role as Chairperson in accordance with Roberts Rules of Order. He emphasized he is to oversee the meetings and that members are to make motions while he: (1) recognizes those who wish to make a motion (2) asks for a second to a motion (3) opens the matter for discussion (4) assures order and decorum (5) Schertz Historical Preservation Committee Minutes - January 15, 2009 Page 2 D. Chairman Weirtz announced receipt of correspondence from the Riedisheim Historical Society. E. Chairman Weirtz requested member submit names, address and phone number of persons members would like to see invited to the official open house for the Kramer House (date unknown). F. Chairman Weirtz announced receipt of correspondence from the Riedisheim Historical Society. III. Subcommittee Reports with Considerations and/or Actions A. Cemetery - Gail Hyatt reported that the subcommittee continues to work":()n the Schneider Cemetery. The subcommittee will make a second trip to the cemetery site to wrap things up. B. Historian - Lula Mae Schertz reported on various functions taking place in the county. The City of Seguin has two homes for show. Steinmeyer-Fey House, 623 Erskine Street and the Weinert House, 1207 N. Austin Street are open for show. Lula Mae menioned that the art of quilting is causing some attention. She announced that the Texas Historical Commission will be taking over the Old Pottery Factory in Seguin. C. Outreach - 1. Debbie Drause announced she will be making a contribution to the museum of a small 01 Bossie dairy creamer 2. Chairman Weirtz reported contact with the following individuals for information or artifacts: . Kathleen Elbel- relatives owned 01 Bossy Dairy . Cheryl Brannon - provided photo of 01 Bossy Dairy Store Mrs. Brannon's mother will donate a Schertz High School basketball letter jacket. . Connie Rodirquez - cartaker of the Schertz Cemetery, FM 1518, where Mexican-American families are buried. . Robert Dietz - great grandson of the original settler family. . Bob Dale - seeking additional penciVpen sketches for use in Kramer House and Museum. Schertz Historical Preservation Committee Minutes -January 15, 2009 Page 3 . Ed Brinkman - California resident who sent copies of local scene sketches drawn by Larry Dawson. Sketches could be used for postcard development. 3. Chairman Weirtz identified events which the Committee representatives were present for and/or sold books at: . November City Council meeting . Festival of Angles . Visions of Santa D. Museum - 1. Chairman Weirtz and Tom DeKunder have met with the architect for the old library renovation and discussed the types of display areas necessary. 2. Earl Sawyer, Tom DeKunder and Chairman Weirtz plan to visit the Institute of Texan Culture for ideas on display preparation. E. Schertz City History Research Project (phase II) - 1. Treasure's report on book sales by Lou Foehrkolb (Attached Transaction History Log and accompanying Tracking Journal). 2. Chairman Weirtz announced the completed revision of edition II of the Committee's book. He requested Committee approval to print 300 copies. Discussions concerning corrections to the first edition of the book were held and Committee members Debbie Krause, Earl Sawyer and Mayor Baldwin were selected to review the second edition before printing. Gail Hyatt made a motion to approve the printing of the second edition (300 copies) after the above review committee indicates approval (following review) to Chairman Weirtz. Debbie seconded the motion and a unanimous vote approved the motion. Schertz Historical Prevention Committee Minutes - January 15, 2009 Page 4 IV. Regular Agenda A. Minutes: A motion was made by Debbie Krause and seconded by Earl Sawyer to accept as written the minutes ofthe regular meeting of November 20, 2008. B. Kramer House Preparations: Chairman Weirtz, Tom DeKunder and Earl Sawyer reported having discussions regarding decorating and furnishing the Kramer House Visitors Center. Chairman Weirtz announced that Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union would donate furniture to the Schertz Chamber of Commerce for use at the Kramer House. Discussion was held regarding several theme ideas for displays at the Kramer House to include: 50th Anniversary events, Riedisheim France connections, historic quotes, Urban Renewal, Randolph Air Force Base history, local artists and agriculture of the area. Debbie Krause announced that she would like to create a piece of stained glass for display at the Kramer House. C. Steam Pump Donation: Debbie Krause announced she would donate a steam pump to the museum. Earl Sawyer stated he would be helping Ms. Krause with research on the historical value of the steam pump. Ms. Krause mentioned that her father, Willie Krause, told her that the steam pump was from the old cotton gin in Schertz. Ms. Krause thinks the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. has a similar pump on display. Acceptance of the pump awaits historical authentication. D. Fun.d Expenditures: Chairman Weirtz requested Committee approval of his voucher submission for personal expenditures of $784.31 on beh~lf of Committee projects related to the Kramer House and the Museum development project. A motion was made by Malford Ackermann and seconded by Earl Sawyer to approve the voucher submission. The motion passed by unanimous vote. Lou F oehrkolb requested Committee approval of his voucher submission for personal expenditures of $50.00 on behalf of the Committee (Committee Banner). The motion passed by unanimous vote. V.
