SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS
Cemetery
Gail Hyatt reported that the cemetery committee met Monday, February 2, 2009.
Schneider Cemetery caretaker, Merle Behne was guest speaker. Mr. Behne graciously
answered questions of concerns regarding how all family members were related. The
committee concurred that the cemetery meeting was most interesting and productive; the
committee will continue their work.
Gail Hyatt also reported contact with CCMA (Cibolo Creek Municipal Authority), and
said that CCMA has advised that when the cemetery committee is ready ---- CCMA
would allow the cemetery committee to visit the cemetery on their property off Schaefer
Road.
Historian
Lula Mae Schertz reported on various news items in the surrounding area. The City of
Seguin, Heritage Museum has a Pictorial display on Black History. Mrs. Schertz also
mentioned an interesting piece of history a "Coal Oil Lamp".
She went on to say that, The Herald Newspaper had an article regarding a century old
house given to the City of Converse. This was the home of Adolph Scheele, recently
deceased; home is located at 841 Old Cimarron Trail. The home has items of interest
such as a steel baby bed made in 1912, when Mr. Scheele was born. An antique buggy
owned and driven by Anton Schumann, when the family lived in the area. Other items of
interest include a milk separator and sewing machine. With this wonderful gift to the City
of Converse, we see the beginning of the Converse Historic Committee.
Mrs. Schertz also mentioned the article concerning a new park in our area; FEMA is
putting in a new park at the Crescent Bend Nature Park.
Outreach
Many contacts made during the time since our last meeting. Debbie Krause purchased
several items at a yard sale for use in the history museum, and reported that the steam
machine is still being examined. Also reported; Mayor Baldwin met with Margie Kramer
regarding her contribution of photo and history information for the Visitors Center
opening. Tom DeKunder, Earl Sawyer and Dean Weirtz visited with the Curator of the
Institute of Texas Cultural Center regarding museum development. Dean Weirtz met with
Bob Dale, Dr. Michael Tews and representatives of the Randolph Air Force Base History
Office and obtained materials for the museum and Visitors Center. Mr. Weirtz has had
contacts with representatives of both the San Antonio Weavers Guild and Needlepoint
Guild and offers of assistance solicited. Mr. Weirtz still awaits communication with
Robert Dietz. The Stolte family members (James & Patricia Stole) (Chancellor) were
interviewed by Dean Wiertz and family photos obtained.
****Ideas that need future attention... ...Storage need (priority)
Possibly producing a community cookbook
Gathering artwork from local artists, (i.e. Bob Dale, Billy Keene and RAFB).
Dean Wiertz presented a piece of art by Dr. Michael Teus, Phd. The art piece "Old
Glory", is a wonderful piece, it will hold a special place.
****Postcard development project in use for book sales publicity.
Museum
Progress on the Center awaits completion of park road and parking lot contact.
Museum development expected in late summer. Dean Weirtz continues task of soliciting
materials for the project. Members should keep looking for materials for the use in the
