Schertz Historical Preservation Committee
Meeting of June 19, 2008
I. Meeting called to order at 6:31 p.m. by Chairman Dean Weirtz with a
quorum present

III. Announcements:
A. Tee shirt displayed with Committee title and caption/photo - Potential
fundraiser item in the future.
B. Greeting of Tom DeKunder
C. Discussion of Historic Site Dedication ceremony at Randolph Field Realty
Building, 508 Main Street.
D. National Alliance of Preservation Commission Forum - July 10-13,2008
at New Orleans, LA.

ID. Subcommittee Reports:
A. City Historical Plaque Development - Mayor Baldwin report that all work
completed and the plaque has been placed on the front of the Randolph Field
Reality Office on Main Street.
B. Riedel Furniture Acquisition - Larry Brenner continues contacts with the
Riedel's son-in-law and all possible donations must await availability of space
for storage.
C. Cemetery - Larry Brenner outlined his subcommittees approach to collecting
information on cemeteries and supplied general ideas of what type of
information the subcommittee would like to obtain.
D. Archives - Ray Mueller has had contact with Margaret Riley and a newspaper
obtained. Ray continues working on the Schertz history binder at the library.
Ray supplied the Chairman with paper copies of the Castro Ship List and
DVDs of the Ship List and an SHPC Archives Preservation Reference Listing.
E. Historian - Lula Mae Schertz has collected articles that appeared in Schertz
Tales and the San Antonio Express News and placed them in the Scrap Book.
F. Outreach - Dean Weirtz has received a gift from Howard Ackerman (son of
HugoAckerman) of old copies of the Valley News Newspaper that his former
,l stepmother had collected. The inventory of the newspapers has been

completed and the attached listing outlines the dates of the issues gifted. Dean
also displayed pictures of the aerial overview of Schertz (circa 1943) donated by
Walter and Lula Mae Schertz with supporting photos and a blow-up photo of a
postal stamp of the artwork Mona Lisa for possible inclusion in the postal exhibit
when a museum is established.

recommended the addition of a description of the content of what the guest speaker
presented to the Committee and something about the credentials of the speaker. Larry
also suggested that the date of approval of the minutes be changed from May 15,2008 to
the correct date. Both items were agreed to by the Committee and changes have been
made.
V Visitor Center slide presentation - Mayor Baldwin narrated a discussion of the
architects plans for rehab of the Kramer Farm House. Mayor Baldwin indicated that the
Committee is to be given space in two of the rooms of the house.
VI Committee By-laws were amended by unanimous vote to include Articles XIII
and XIV (see attached).
VIT Committee Internal Budget was approved as prepared (see attached).

VIT Dean Weirtz submitted an invoice for Committee expenses for approval.
Unanimous approval was obtained for expenditures in the amount of$163.92.
VIT. Subcommittee appointments: Motion was offered by Dean Weirtz to establish
two separate subcommittees: (1) Historical Site Designation Subcommittee (2) Museum
and Visitor Center Subcommittee. The Committee unanimously approved the
establishment of the two subcommittees. Appointments to each committee were as
follows: (1) Mayor Baldwin (Chairman), John Correu, Merle Behne, Debbie Kruse, Pat
Ramirez (pending approval by Pat) (2) Tom DeKunder (Chairman), Dean Weirtz, Ray
Mueller, Cindy Alexander.
